COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A bill featuring a "stand your ground" provision has been in a Senate committee since early last month, and opponents are calling for legislative leaders to not let it get any further.
A coalition of legislators and activists gathered at the offices of liberal advocacy group ProgressOhio on Thursday to push for a moratorium on House Bill 203. The event centered on a speech from Lucia McBath, the mother of 17-year-old Jordan Davis, who was shot and killed at a Florida gas station in Nov. 2012 over an argument about loud music. McBath is also a spokeswoman for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
The "stand your ground" provision would eliminate Ohio's law requiring a person to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense. Under current Ohio law, residents have no duty to retreat only when they are in their homes, cars, or the vehicles of immediate family members a so-called "castle doctrine."
McBath said she met with Ohio legislators and policy aides to express her concerns for the measure and said they were open to learning more about the bill's potential impact.
Rep. Alicia Reece was on hand to reiterate McBath's opposition for what the Cincinnati Democrat called one of the most polarizing pieces of legislation in the country.
Ohio gubernatorial candidate in the Democratic primary, former Dayton-area tow truck operator, Larry Ealy, added that, if elected, he would work to block "stand your ground" legislation from passing, or would try to repeal such a proposal if it were signed into law by Gov. John Kasich.

Lucia is a long way from home —
Uh, Fl——— Oh? Where’s the outcry over too much bass? More cowbell. I don’t think anyone ever got shot over more cowbell.
“An argument over loud music”
Why are the relevant facts never mentioned.
Stand Your Ground. Good enough for LEOs, not good enough for the little people.
stand your ground wasn’t even invoked by Dunn’s defense. It is included in all Florida jury instructions where the argument of self defense has come up so that the jury knows what the state laws are regardless of whether the defense actually claims SYG as a defense.
Because they would undermine the whole charade.
Why on Earth is legislation affirming someone's right to defend one's self against thugs "polarizing"?
A "duty to retreat" amounts to a duty to surrender to crime and to allow and even encourage thugs and criminals to continue their thuggery and crime.
“Duty to flee” laws were designed to prevent blacks from defending themselves or their families when the KKK mad a midnight call.
Knock on the front door, flee out the back into the waiting arms of the mob.
The only person who decides when and how I defend myself or my family is me...
Those white folk need to bow down and beg forgiveness when a Trayvon assaults them.
Looks like the shooter didn't get a free pass under the Stand Your Ground law - he acted stupidly and was convicted for it - the law had no benefit to the guy who did the shooting. She "has no standing".
I don’t need any stinking law to protect me and mine. Goes with the territory.
Binged this Dunn Davis case but could find very little facts about the shooting but found tons of emotional BS by the prosecutor and Davis’s (different last name) family. From what little is out there about the incident had Dunn been carrying a badge it was a justifiable shoot and he would be back on duty by now.
Of the 3 cases in Florida that are mentioned as “Stand Your Ground” cases, not a single one was. One was a self defense case one was an attempted murder case, and the other was unlawful discharge of a firearm.
We have a stand you ground law in NH which the local LEO thugs have been trying to undermine.
Luckily we also have a Very strong 2ND Amendment culture and a very low crime rate, probably because if you screw up go to jail for a long time.
