Photos Of Sochi Looking Like A Ghost City One Month After The Olympics
Business Insider ^ | 03/26/2014 | Tony Manfred

The future of the Sochi Olympic venues is unclear. Alexander Valov, a Russian reporter for BlogSochi, visited Sochi's "coastal cluster" — a site that includes six venues, the Olympic Village, and the Olympic Park, all built from scratch on an undeveloped plot of land — and he took some eerie photos this week.

He called the area around the Olympic Village "Dead City."

The photos are a reminder that much of what was built for the Olympics has no long-term use.

While a few arenas and other buildings have plans going forward — the media center is being turned into a mall! — the Russian government is still behind schedule on post-Olympics planning.

Valov's photos, which we're republishing with his permission, should serve as a warning for what could become of the "coastal cluster."

I don’t care. The Olympics is a public works project. Some countries do it well and some fail.

They spent a lot of money they won’t be using for weapons to attack their neighbors.

Don’t forget the snow machines.

“They have leaves on trees and green grass there right now?”

The Sochi Olympics were in two locations. One, in the snow-covered mountains 30 miles away from the city center. That’s where snowboarding and skiing events took place.

The other was at Olympic Park, which had the stadium and skating rinks. That area is located on the seashore and has warmer weather similar to the French Riviera. In fact, the weather there allows palm trees to grow year round.

Hope it works out better than Sarajevo for the locals...

Looks like early Sunday morning in any town USA, with the usual Government/union slipshod infrastructure with the exception that it looks clean.

What happened to all the snow?

Anyway, am I alone here or am I the only one who thinks it dumb that the Olympics are held in a different venue every time.

All that infrastructure getting built - billions of dollars expended and years of work - all for about 13 days of actual "games" (with two days of marching around a stadium with flags). All so some obscure hamlet (Lake Placid anybody?) or large city can get a brief shining moment in the limelight.

I was in Los Angeles during the 1984 Olympics and that was a joy. There was traffic everywhere! Restaurants were jammed! People were walking around all herky-jerky. It was a crazy, crazy time. I don't even remember who won.

Sochi was a convenient reason to pre-stage military arms and men prior to the crimean events.

It’s another example of what’s wrong with the policies of the vainglorious Putin. He spent more than all previous Olympics combined to no lasting value for the Russian people. He’s taken $75 billion from them for his own purposes, too. And his criminal activities in Ukraine are similar. It’s all about theft and hubris.

The grass doesn’t die in some places. It’s green all year in Germany, and Sochi is way south of Germany.

I was thinking the same. I would propose a few PERMANENT ROTATING VENUES.

I've always said that the primary reason the US has never been very good in the sledding events is due to the lack of training facilities.

We made significant strides this olympics and I suspect it's due to the facilities at both Salt Lake City and Lake Tahoe that are now being used to train our athletes.......

Didn’t one of the stadiums become a cemetery or something like that also.

If it were up to me, I’d choose the following sites as PERMANENT OLYMPIC sites where they can rotate every 4 years...

SUMMER OLYMPICS

Los Angeles (this made profits for the city in 1932 and 1984. Facilities still being used )

Sydney (this made a profit too and was one of the best venues ever. Facilities still being used )

Seoul ( This made a record profit in 1988. facilities still being used )

London ( This made about 53 million pounds in profit ).

WINTER

Salt Lake City ( This made over a hundred million in profits and the facilities are still being used )

Calgary ( made about 35 million Canadian in profit in 1988 ).

Lillehammer, Norway ( I think they broke even, but the facilities are still being used by Norway, the Dutch and the Swedes )

Excellent idea and I would add Lake Tahoe (1960 winter olympics) to your winter schedule.

Only a 90 minute drive from Reno....

What is? Putin is trying to drum up tourism by invading Crimea?
