11 one-season sci-fi TV wonders you can watch right now on Netflix
Blastr ^ | March 26, 2014 | Trent Moore

While we wait to see if freshmen series like Almost Human and Tomorrow People survive for a second year, we thought it’d be a good time to take a look back at some of our favorite one-season sci-fi wonders.

We’re drawing close to the dog days of summer, and though there’s more original sci-fi fare than there used to be, it’s still essentially the doldrums for a genre fan. Luckily for all of us, that’s where streaming services like Netflix come in handy. What better way to spend the downtime than to catch up on some gems that never got a second chance?

I really liked The Event and Terra Nova. Could not make it through surface I will try some of the others. Survivors was three series, wish it had continued.

Looking forward to season 2 of Defiance.

It took a couple shows to start growing on me but I like the free market town standing against the Earth Republic.

Yeah..........

I want to watch 10-15 episodes of a series that was cancelled after it's 1st season with a myriad of unresolved plot lines.

I miss the days of Barnaby Jones, Mannix, Cannon, Rockford Files, Columbo, etc.. where each episode had a beginning, a middle and an end with closure and resolution.

You could miss 2 or 3 episodes and still enjoy the show.

Now, you have to watch every episode, and if you miss just one, you end up clueless and lost........

just like Obama.

I really liked The Event and Terra Nova.

Thanks, i'll put on my list to check out. Always looking for good...well, interesting scifi. I saw all of 4400, which wasnt bad. But Helix, a series on right now, i had to stop watching after four episodes. The characters are making stupid decisions (more than usual for a TV series)

Also liked Caprica — but it wasn’t so much dumb as it was creepy.

I’ve been wanting to see Firefly for some time. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

I tried watching Caprica once...eh. I think my disappointment at the final season or two of BSG soured me on a spinoff. I probably didn’t give it a fair chance.

I wish SPACE: Above and Beyond was on that list. I really enjoyed that one, though the (obviously unresolved) cliffhanger at the end of the first and only season bugs me. I would love to know where they would have gone with the storyline.

I was going to give that show a chance, watched a behind-the-scenes where someone mentions the religious center is also a brothel. That was the end of my interest.

I’m with you. I only really care for tv-series with episodes that offer self-contained storylines. Have zero interest in anything serialized. Remember an interesting academic discussion on this several decades ago, reflecting the differences between the tastes of men and women. Supposedly, women looked at ‘life’ as a long, winding, unresolved thread, and men looked at life as a series of singular, individual incidents. Supposedly this explained the female predilection for soap operas. But now serialization is the norm. Which could also conceivably reflect the feminization of the culture. Although I’m not so sure things are so much feminized any more as they are all-out faggoty.

Anyway, the only sci-fi series left that I’m awaiting to arrive on dvd is the old 1950s “Science Fiction Theater,” hosted by Truman Bradley. It’s more ‘science’ than sci-fi, but I still enjoy its dated vibe.

Absolutely.

Jayne made the show incredibly funny.

Fav line from "Serenity."

And he was really all about himself most of the time.

It went for 2 shortened seasons, but Dollhouse was incredible.
The acting was great, as was the writing.
The episode where Sierra finds out why she’s in the Dollhouse was heart-wrenching to me. And this time Fox let Joss finish the story.

I totally forgot about Surface.

I enjoyed a show from 2005 called Threshold. It explored some interesting, somewhat creepy ideas about how aliens could infiltrate earth using, in part, an audio signal that somehow rewrites the DNA of the human race in such a way that they become alien themselves. Central to all this is a fractal triskelion pattern that keeps appearing – in electronic signals, blood, and even the pattern made by city lights.

Caprica was OK but it was too slow. They could have done the whole season in about 5 decently written/paced episodes.

Awake’s ending was contrived and disappointing. It was more like the Pam Ewing season that was a dream.

I thought Caprica survived more than 1 season. By the time it seemed to have figured out what direction is was going, it was too late.

Outcasts was interesting. The Gates was pretty good — different, at least.

It looks like several more will be joining the club at the end of the current season.

Intelligence (CBS) is low in the ratings. I enjoy it, Almost Human, and Tomorrow People. CW’s Star-Crossed seems headed for a short-run.

Too many times I became vested in watching a show with the main story line having never been resolved and while one or two subplots would be resolved, two or 3 new ones would be unleashed...........then only to have the show cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons.

Now I wait to watch a show that has a continuing story line from week to week and season to season until I know that it is critically acclaimed and also has what the creator deemed as closure........

Sopranos

Breaking Bad

Lost

I set an exam question for my students last year based on this exchange (which is my favourite):

Simon: I'm trying to put this as delicately as I can... How do I know you won't kill me in my sleep?
Mal: You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

I could watch Firefly over and over.

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can’t take the sky from me

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me

There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me...
