This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

You’ve made good progress. We are going to grow some dry beans this year. We have lots of canned beans from last year still left. Nor sure we’ll have them all eaten before the new crop of green beans is ready for picking.

I’m going for Pintos and Great Northern. Hubby is going to let some of his top crop mature to the dry bean stage.

Beware deer and rabbits. They love them.

Sounds like you need to get some more grapes from the grocery store. We have trouble with grapes. One year it was coons, one year drought, another year some sort of fungus or blight.

Have yet to get a big enough crop for wine.

Have yet to see a deer. We do have rabbits and squirrels, but the rabbits don’t usually come close to the house, since our dog is out pretty often barking.

Just to be safe, I may make a lean to out of chicken wire. The bed has a fence in the back, so it would be easy to do.

Your local ag dept might want to know about your Pierce’s disease resistant grapevine. Seriously. I’ve got the same issues wrt disease and I keep talking myself out of planting grapes. I want something fairly low maintenance. Not a moneypit project that requires ever increasing allotments of my time.

Where did you get your grape/muscadines that were purchased?

The deer in my ‘hood waited till my beans were *almost* ready. And then struck all at once, eating them to the ground.

This year we have a hot line.

We’ll see if it makes any difference.

I am so thankful that we don’t have deer in our neighborhood. There are quite a few further out from town where there’s lots of unoccupied land and forage.

Haven’t seen a single one this close to town in 40 years.

It’s 90, sunny and windy. Texas skipped spring by going from winter to summer, blam!

Johnny and others, did/will you get hit by the storm this evening? It came out of nowhere. I had checked the weather and was sitting down the last of the inside seedling trays onto the back porch when hubby yelled to bring them back in because golf ball hail was on the way. Thankfully, we just got the wind but some friends put up pics that looked like snow.

I finally got the berries but had to settle for an ohchita and an apache which I didn’t want because of the chill requirement. These are thornless but had wanted thorns to deter the deer and sneaky fingers. Here, you get what’s at the garden center or do without. I bought a fig but will probably give it to the neighbor and got some more seeds (like I really need more, not). Also, picked up a roll of landscape fabric. Thanks, all who made recommendations but, again, had to get the best (Scotts Pro) of the two they had on the shelf. We’ll see how it holds up against the TX sun.

I’m all kinds of impressed with these old peanuts, lol. They’re growing great guns. Some still popping up and some 3”.

Yikes, just saw an eagle flying off with dinner that was rabbit or cat size. Well, I can’t say anything since I killed a snake on the garden bench this afternoon.

Off topic but an important reminder. We just got a call from someone trying to sell us something for a local charity. Of course, we didn’t fall for it and made a couple of calls afterward to verify our suspicions. Sure enough it was a scam to get credit card numbers and reported it. FRiends, be careful and aware.

Hi all. Greetings from middle Tennessee. Weather is warming up with thunderstorms on the way. Daffodils are up. Tulips on the way. Still planning the garden.

Question-I should know this and feel stupid for asking but when it states “days to harvest/maturity” on seed packets does that mean days from when you planted the seed, or days from actual germination or what?

Sure good reading everyones posts. Thanks!

Days to Maturity is an average. It can vary 20 to 30 days based on planting time, soil, and climate while growing.

For seeds that are normally direct planted, DTM is the time from planting into the ground and includes the germination time.

It is my understanding that for plants that are normally started inside, the DTM may be measured from the transplant date, which makes no sense to me.

That’s all I have heard about the subject. One thing is sure that DTM should just be a guesstimate guideline so that you know which crop is likely to mature first. Also remember that is just to your first picking. Several weeks of harvest can come after that date.

Thx greeneyes. This is helpful. Reminds me of the line in the movie “pirates of the Caribbean”. “They aren’t rules. They’re guidelines”. Lol.

Nice work.
Pipe or paper?
I'm reading these Texas weather reports, and it sounds like you all go from winter to spring overnight.
I'm still technically winter, so I am holding back planting tomato and pepper. But our mesquite are beginning to leaf.

We are hardening off Brussels sprouts, tomatoes and a few others today. Temps in the 70s this weekend will see all our plants out to enjoy real sunshine and air.
I'm a little worried about how “gangly” the tomatoes have become. They may need a haircut before moving to the garden...
