You should be able to drive across the Northwestern part of the United States a little more quickly in the coming months. Idaho and Wyoming have just passed laws to raise some interstate speed limits to 80 miles per hour.
The Idaho law goes into effect on July 1, but there could be a delay because the Idaho Transportation Department is still conducting safety surveys to decide where to raise limits. It might be late summer before drivers actually see a change. According to a report from local television news station KMVT, the department actually opposed the bill, but it was pushed through by the state's legislature. I’m all for getting places faster but with an 80MPH posting comes 90MPH driving. The slightest misjudgment would result in maximum damage. It doesn’t appeal to me at all.
I’m not sure it’s the people doing 90mph who are going to be causing problems.
More likely, it will be the one’s who crawl on at 40mph and cut across three lanes to park themselves in the passing lane.
UT has had 80 mph test zones for a number of years and has made them permanent. It needs to be higher, but I’ll accept 80. No one is required to drive faster than they are capable or deem safe. Unless you happen to believe the minimum speed of 45 is unsafe. It has forever been in the driving world you drive not only for yourself but everyone else on the road around you. Awareness of what is going on around you is critical to your safety and that of others.
Note that the “bluer” the state, the lower the speed limit.

We should emulate Germany and Austria, which have no speed limit on their freeways.

To paraphrase off a previous comment; “the bluer the state the slower the driving” = “the bluer the state the greater the menace”.
They all wish for the Carter years and 55 mph limits on the Interstates.
Oregon, for example, has a one-size-fits-all approach to speed limits, so all 2 lane highways are limited to 55. This is irksome on US95 (a road I drive regularly), where sections of the highway are straight as an arrow for 15 miles at a time with good visibility.

Actually I would disagree. In Utah there is a large segment of 80 MPH (on I15 south to AZ and NV towards Las Vegas). I drive that stretch of road every year, and I don’t find many people going faster than 80, and in fact most do under the posted limit. I generally like a cruising speed of 80, so I just do the limit.
3 years ago I drove thru ID, UT and WY.
Put cruise control on 80 and never took it off.
Passed about 300 trucks but only a handful of cars.
I-25 between Colorado Springs and Denver will often hit 95-105 MPH. Rush hour traffic density, three lanes wide and bumper to bumper. Slower traffic keep right - it’s the law.
Amen. They have this limit on a stretch of I-15 in Utah below Provo and when I'm doing 75, people are still blazing by me. Above 80, you're not driving a car, you are aiming it.
Slow drivers should stay to the right lane. They often don’t, lingering smugly in the left. Around the WDC area they have a term for it “Nestering”. There used to be this retired government “public servant” named Nester who spent his retirement years driving all day in the left lane of the beltway, driving the speed limit and jamming traffic behind him. He did this for years. What a complete moron (likely a LIB/DIM asshat).
I do 75 in the right lane and 80-85 for a few minutes to pass the slower ones. I’ve come up on some doing 65-70 MIGHTY FAST, so I imagine at 80+ things get interesting.
Luckily, I’ve only met some Nesters locally, doing 10 in a 35 mph area.
I can confirm it ... they do drive FAST in Texas ... :-) ...
In Oklahoma, that seems to be MANDATORY, as they've got these crazy LEFT EXITS on the freeways!
And so, to exit off, you go right into (usually) the fastest traffic on the freeway!
That’s not a very good correlation ... :-) ...
