I guess I have abnormalcy bias. LOL I am always thinking of stuff that could happen, and thinking through how our plans would help us get through, and if there is something additional needed.
Amen to that. Every day that passes, is a gift - another day to get better prepared, but no one can be 100% prepared, because there are so many possibilities.
I have an advantage, because I live in rural area, and when I was growing up, I stayed with my grandparents, who didn’t have indoor plumbing and few modern conveniences.
Even so, they had more than my granny had growing up. I always asked her to tell me what it was like when she grew up, so she would tell me how it was with no electricity and other stuff.
I sincerely hope that we are not tested on this and many other scenarios. Dealing with natural disasters is more than enough for me.
I agree. People have lived for thousands of years on this earth without electricity, cars, washing machines, air conditioners.

I think part of the problem is that when we refer to “SHTF” sorts of events we each have different ideas of what that means. There’s lots of ways for the S to hit the F. There’s different kinds of S that could hit lots of different kinds of F.
I think too many people are influenced by Hollywood ideas of post-apocalyptic America that are long on drama but light on probability.
We’ll be doing really well if we can get most people prepped for even a few weeks of self-reliance. That alone would be a huge step.
Start by learning a new accent?
I think the Amish and the folks like them are fairly well prepared, except for those on critical medicines since in most cases the government will not allow you to stockpile. Heaven help folks with serious diabetes or heart conditions, etc. My guess though is that there will be small pockets that survive quite well. The Amish in Smyrna Maine seem largely self sufficient as one example.
I’d call that a good start.LOL I’ve got canned chickens, pork, tuna, salmon, clams, dehydrated meats, to last a year. We also have lots of rice,beans, and other staples for at least a year. Now we are working on expanding our normal 3 month pantry to a one year pantry for all our favorites.
I also have 24 gallons of bottled water, and 2000 gallons of pool water, and 130 gallons of rain barrel water, and a well. We have 3 backup ways of getting the well water in case the electricity goes off.
We have several ranks of firewood, and two years of future firewood on our extra lot, and about 10 years worth on our land out of town which is by a small stream. Our property line goes to the middle of the stream.
I am thinking we might have the water thing squared away. Still working on the food supply and other stuff. It’s a work in process, and we do use the stuff regulary.
We also started growing and preserving our own food. Every year our pantry has a bit more of homegrown stuff versus stuff we used to buy in the supermarket.
insulin? My wife buys her’s in a 5 pack of pen injectors. They last almost 1 month per pen. So her perscription is for 4-5 months. Now that is not forever, but it is quite a while.
Until the pen is opened, it has shelf life. Once it is opened it is good for 30 days. She uses one up in just under the 30 days, so no waste.
She only recently started taking shots, before it was pills. She could probably survive without the shots, by seriously restricting her sugar intake and her diet.
Ammo might be needed if the guy up stream dams the river. That’s what happened here and no one was able to stop it.
Never talk about that on the internet. It’s a key word for federal snooperalies.LOL
That stream would be a last resort, but it only takes one tiny hole to eventually bring down a dam.
Excellent, thanks Kart. The example of Jews in Germany may be the best. The warning signs were EVERYWHERE for them, but since nothing like the holocaust had ever happened, the Jews figured it was all bluster.
That’s why words mean things (as Rush always says), and you ignore them at your own peril. When I was in college, during the Cold War, I would read what the left published and go to their lectures. They weren’t talking about equal pay for women, the minimum wage, or contraceptive coverage - they were talking about revolution in the United States, violent revolution. Most people in college giggled at them and were more busy with classes. But they wanted their revolution...and the only thing that stopped them was the inability to whip up the country enough. Now they are today’s generation of Democrats - but NOTHING has changed inside their hearts, they are still very dangerous people, if they ever get the means to act on it.
