It's not just their own: My dearly departed JRT Janey never ate her own poop, but regarded the cats' litterbox as a snack bar.

Because your dog cannot find a politician, a bureaucrat or an IRS or BLM agent in your yard. He has no choice but to eat the next closest thing to those items he CAN find.

This is why sand turtles prefer a well fed cow as a close neighbor. Otherwise, this is a topic only a Gastroenteritis Specialist would want to spend a whole evening contemplating.

Wrong. They have taste buds, just fewer than humans. Mostly on the tip of their tongue. They distinguish the 4 basic flavors we do, just not as well. They have an extreme sense of smell and smell can equal taste. The poop smell delicious to them, so they want to eat it.
My vet is awesome.
