Residents of Western and Midwestern states are generally more positive about their states as places to live. With the exception of the New England states of New Hampshire and Vermont, all of the top 10 rated states are west of the Mississippi River. In addition to Montana and Alaska, Utah (70%), Wyoming (69%), and Colorado (65%) are among the 10 states that residents are most likely to say their state is among the best places to reside. Most of these states have relatively low populations, including Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota, and Alaska - the four states with the smallest populations in the nation.

Illinois has the unfortunate distinction of being the state with the highest percentage of residents who say it is the worst possible place to live. One in four Illinois residents (25%) say the state is the worst place to live, followed by 17% each in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

I’d throw out MN and OR and most of those state residents never travel more than 300 miles away.
New Mexico was a big surprise as it is very pretty but the most class have/have not state I’ve ever been in.

There isn’t enough global warming in Alaska or Montana for me.
It’s in the Montanan DNA. When I was a little girl I used to thAnk God for making me American, and Montanan. I once said to my mother, “Mommy, do the people in the other states know Montana is the best.?” Not that arrogant any more. It’s a great place to live if you can tolerate cold winters and don’t expect to make a lot of money.
I remember reading a book by Elmer Keith in which he said it was too cold in Montana so he moved to Salmon Idaho.
Best to stay away from Montana.
Mississippi is absolutely horrible. Too hot in the Summer and because of the poverty hard to make a living.
Toss me into any state at random and I'll figure out a way to like it. Go ahead, I'm serious. Go ahead and just toss me into the state of your choosing. I'm waiting...
But not in winter. Or summer. Fall and spring can be okay.

Just goes to show you. Those who enjoyed high school pep rallies the most have moved to some of the least populated states and pushed for more regulations and fees against private property rights.
Was that the origin of “Dont Californicate...”? I have heard “Dont Californicate WA” and “Dont Californicate Montana”.
Oregon—a very funny place. I heard a standup comedian say that it’s the place where doctors can help people kill themselves but its illegal to pump your own gas.
There was a campaign in the 60s or early 70s to keep outsiders out of Oregon. My mother, always looking for excuses not to travel, took it VERY seriously. We never visited my cousin who lived in Bend, then Newport. I was in my mid-20s the first time I went to Oregon, and even now it feels weird and forbidden.
Portland is fun to visit but I wouldn’t want to pay property taxes there. I think their motto is “Be a world class city or die trying.” Even though smaller than Seattle, they have a similar problem with homeless downtown and those sorts of things.
