Toronto library asked to shelve Dr. Seuss' 'Hop on Pop' because it promotes violence

TORONTO, Librarians at the Toronto Public Library were asked to remove copies of Dr. Seuss’ 1963 children's book "Hop on Pop” from the establishment’s collection because it allegedly promotes violence.

A document detailing the seven books the library has been asked to remove over the past year was posted online on Monday.

The book “encourages children to use violence against their fathers,” according to the complaint.

In addition to apologizing to fathers in the Toronto area, the complainant also asked that the library “pay for damages resulting from the book.”

The Materials Review Committee pointed out that the book is “humorous,” “well-loved” and that it has “appeared on many ‘Best of’ children’s book lists.”

The MRC also pointed out that the children in the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s book are actually told not to hop on pop.

Despite the complaint, the library opted to retain the book in the children's collection.

The “complainant” needs to be exposed and publicly shamed.

Those who wish to ban books for moronic reasons... they are the ones who promote my violent thoughts...

Absolutely.

My kids still like to Hop on Pop.

I'll enjoy it while it lasts, or until they get too big and I don't want them to anymore. :-)

What is it about sitting on the floor that is translated into an invitation to tackle me?

I have this book at least partially memorized - at some point it says “stop, you must not hop on pop” therefore teaching children to mind and have respect for their elders.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Gone With the Wind, Fahrenheit 451, James and the Giant Peach, and To Kill a Mockingbird have been banned by schools for being socially offensive.

Jaws was banned by a school for having too much sexual contact.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was banned by the Texas Board of Education in 2010, because its author, Bill Martin, Jr. was a marxist; problem is, Bill Martin, Jr., the marxist author, isn't Bill Martin, Jr., the children's book author.

Charlotte's Web was banned in a school district in Kansas because two talking animals must be the work of the devil.

Merrimack, NH, schools, pulled Twelfth Night, by Bill Shakespeare. Girl washes ashore after a shipwreck, disguises herself as a page, and falls in love with her male master. Cross-dressing, faux same-sex romance violated school district's "prohibition of alternative lifestyle instruction."

Most recently, in Meridian, Idaho, when the school district banned "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," students complained, and the publisher sent 350 free copies to be distributed to students. When students tried to distribute them for free in a city park, one of the 'ban the book' fathers called the police.

Good. It's always one malcontent who ruins things for everybody. Someone needs to stand up and tell these complainers to go pound sand.

“”The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,””

I read on another thread that Elizabeth Warren was writing a book. Now it seems she’s already written it.

I’m so confused!

Why is it that someone who is able to work out the correct procedure for challenging a book in the public library system, is incapable of grasping the meaning of a children’s book written almost entirely in monosyllables?
