Taking a Toll: Administration wants to let states charge on interstate highways
FoxNews.com ^ | 4/30/14

Ever driven down I-95 in Maryland, or the New Jersey Turnpike, and parted ways with $10, $20 in tolls?

If the Obama administration has its way, highways across the country could someday be that way.

In a major shift for how governments fund transportation projects, the administration wants to let states charge tolls on interstate highways. A federal ban currently bars states from doing so in most places, but the latest White House push could change that.

Oh good so then they are going to do away with the state and federal tax on gasoline, right?

Well, a crappy economy, high gas prices and more fuel efficient cars all means less fuel being used which means less gas tax collected. Can anyone say, unexpected consequences.

Is there any tax, fee, levy, duty, impost, obligation, toll, tribute, tariff, assign-age, custom or tithe that this man is against?

A great place for TSA checkpoints. I think we are going to become a lot more like third world countries where police are brigands with a badge and a gun.

Federal funds built the interstate highway. Why should we now pay for them again?

If I thought the funds as received were being managed faithfully and to the benefit of all I would have no compunctions.

If frogs had wings . . .

Absolutely not. The Interstate highway system is already up-front bought and paid for with federal tax dollars. Tolling them again after the fact is just wrong. How they get away with it on I 90 through Chicago and Massachusetts, I dunno.

On the contrary, they are going to tax you for even *thinking* about gasoline.

Congress is noticeably absent once again in the making of US laws.

This will seal people into their cities.

One thing that the poor and all Americans had at one time, was the ability to travel, freely.

A 100 dollar beater car, some gas money, and you could go anywhere, drive just for the fun of it.

Let’s hope they don’t get away with put their hands into our pockets again, especially with all the FEDERAL waste, labor rules on contracts that do transportation roadwork, and THE FACT THAT WE HAVE A FEDERAL GAS TAX FOR THAT, in an era with already very high gas prices!~

It’s a crooked deal. In Texas, there was a plan (until the bruhaha about it) to sell our toll roads to a company in Spain and to agree to a “non-compete” clause prohibiting the establishment of alternate roadways.

In Austin, they are trying to turn all new highway construction into tollroads.

In Houston, the stated agreement was that after 20+ years, the Beltway would be paid off and made free. A GOPe official said he never agreed to that (the policy predated his tenure) so he said that he would not abide by it (I think they continue to borrow against the revenue, keeping it from being paid off).

Don’t let the barn door on this get opened. We WILL find ourselves paying to ride on roads we paid for and the money going to private companies (just as the corrupt officials pay out half of the ticket money from red light cameras to private companies).

Can't speak for Chicago but here in the Gay State the "Massachusetts Turnpike Authority" is the resting place for thousands of fat a$$ed brothers-in-law of Rat politicians and "the most vulnerable among us" (IOW,affirmative action). But we must pray for these unfortunates...a Boston columnist did some research a few years ago and found that the unionized toll takers make close to $80K a year and the management makes far,far more.

I just love the toll roads from Chicago to the Wisconsin border. The way they tax us, we are all fools to work for them.
