DETROIT, MI -- An off-duty Detroit police officer shot a suspected robber in the face Saturday afternoon.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody says the officer was working a second job at a pharmacy located at 3611 Conant in Detroit. He is not a security officer for the store. While outside talking on his cell phone about 12:30 p.m. Woody said the suspect approached and demanded the officer's phone.

When he refused, the suspect produced a "nickel-plated revolver and the officer was able to knock the gun away, which gave him time" to run into the store, Woody said..

The suspect tried to chase the officer and was attempting to open the door and fire but the gun jammed. The officer retrieved his gun and shot the suspect once in the face.

The suspect is listed in serious condition but expected to survive, Woody said Saturday afternoon.

My father, deceased, lived in a world where shooting people breaking into your home had to be shot in the house and it was better if they were armed. My father had a Rohm revolver for just such occasions to make sure, after the fact, that the burglar was armed by the time the coroner arrived.

“The officer retrieved his gun and shot the suspect once in the face.”

Apparently the off duty cop left his gun inside the store

Well, I suppose not all of the stories of this kind of thug behavior can end ideally...

Kudos to the off-duty cop. He might need more range time, though.

I had a revolver jam once - it came with some reloaded rounds, and the bullet wasn’t seated correctly on one of the rounds.

I didn’t fire the rest of the reloads.

my GUESS is this is typical 2014 journalism by a lazy journalist educated in a government school. If the gun mis-fired at all, and IF it was a revolver, and if it was a relatively new revolver, then the likely thing that happened was a bad primer and the gun mis-fired but didn’t jam.

The cop seeing the hammer go down and maybe hearing it too, probably said F it and pulled his trigger.

Revolvers can jam, by the cylinder binding. It is MOST COMMON on .22 revolvers, (many of which are cheaply made) due to the excess lead shavings and copious powder residue where the cylinder meets the breech of the barrel. To prevent, clean the gun a LOT. Centerfires, much more reliable.

Should be "a quality, well maintained revolver loaded with the appropriate, quality ammunition rarely jams".

Story here on FR a few months ago, a pos tried carjacking a family, put the .38 Spl revolver to the father's head and pulled the trigger. Fortunately had it loaded with .380 auto rounds.

I was wondering the same thing. Revolver jamming?

to Tupelo and all the other Freepers who are throwing out CRAP on this officer.

Golly gee - video and witness statement back up up officers story

BLACK witness, to boot.

(love the way people, even Freepers, cast dispersions on people without knowing - or waiting for - the whole story - smearing people on the WORLD WIDE web. (Did you ever think, given today’s powder-keg atmosphere, that your errant remarks could set off another round of looting, burning, etc. It isn’t like the thugs need much encouragement. After all, it isn’t truth or justice they seek - only the slightest hint to go into action)

Despicable.

Really?

Maybe you better get after this poster's post #8 - using YOUR moniker????

Post #8 'tupelo" quote: "Hmm. Suddenly, I see warning lights. May be just a reflex thought but reading the officer's statement that, “the suspect produced a “nickel-plated revolver” I started wondering. I am not saying it is impossible, but it sure is rare that a revolver “jams”. Throw down? "

Can you believe the hubris of the thieves these days? The revolving door has
to much oil on the hinge. They fear nothing anymore since there's no justice.

Sounds like the off duty cop needs to get himself a .45

That sounds about right.
