Michael Sam has been selected as the winner of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

The former Missouri defensive end, who likely will be taken in this week's NFL draft, will receive the award given to individuals who transcend sports at the 2014 ESPYS on July 16.

Sam, the SEC's defensive player of the year this past season, has announced he is gay and would become the first openly gay player in the NFL. He said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that he hopes to inspire other athletes.

Even more destructive under group-think ideologies that attempt to undermine wisdom.

You say "tomāto," I say "tomahto." You say "inspire," I say "recruit."

You are right it took no courage in the normal sense of the word. If he had “come out” 25 years ago that may have been different.
I have always felt this was a ploy by his agent to make an also ran player a higher draft pick. Some pundits feel like he does not even deserve to be drafted at all.
Also Sam getting “awards” will make him more marketable for other promotions etc. thus making him a more valuable property for the agent.

I’m betting that he won’t be drafted or even taken as free agent.

Watch him get picked last in the infamous Mister Irrelevant” spot. That will make him throw a Hissy Fit.

He wasn’t homosexual.

I know.........Ashe was a pioneer black in a white dominated sport, much as Jackie Robinson was but without the racial harrassment Robinson went thru.

Ashe's biggest battle was with heart disease.

To give Sam an award created from Ashe's struggles simply because he admitted to being a homosexual is a disgrace to both Arthur Ashe and the annual award.

As a side note, Jackie Robinson was a Republican.........

He is a late-round pick destined for the practice squad at best. He came out of the NFL Scouting Combine with his draft chances just slightly above 50-50. Most recent reports have him not being drafted at all.

Jackie Robinson was a Republican.

True, but he made a left turn in 1964 and never looked back.

Ditto. He’s no good, has no chance of becoming an NFL player. If any team wants to draft a nobody bench warmer and give him a million dollars a year because he’s a sodomite they are not playing with a full deck. NFL teams don’t like to waste their picks for PC nonsense.
