A deep sea lancetfish washed up alive on a Nags Head, North Carolina beach on Monday.

The species have long, high dorsal fins and can grow over six feet long. Their jaws contain several long fang-like teeth as well as several smaller teeth. The station notes that very little is known about the biology of the fish, except that they live in all oceans....

Particularly with that large dorsal, that would make a really interesting mount.

The fin seems to deteriorate rather quickly.

Me either.

Pectorals evident enough...

Could they have seen it swimming upside down?

Journalism isn’t what it used to be.

That’s probably the work of scavengers, and is likely true of most fish. If the fin is present (as it seems to be on this one), the taxidermist ought to be able to save it.

It’s hard to swim when you’re covering up your ‘nads.
A lancetfish bit my sister once, and it was nastee.

Like the blonde that washed up on shore after swimming the English channel—several hours after two other women—she complained bitterly: “The brunette and redheaded cheated! I’m sure they were using their arms.”
Nastee, yes sir.
