Massive swards of locusts invaded the Saudi capital Riyadh, prompting houses and companies to shut their doors and windows and halting traffic in many parts.
Authorities said they were mobilizing their resources to combat the invasion which started on Thursday.
The Arabic language daily Sabq, which carried a brief U-Tube film of the insects, said the locusts flew into the capital from the western part of the Gulf Kingdom, which has been a scene of locust attack over the past months.
Locusts are a popular dish in Saudi Arabia, where a 10-kg bag of live locusts could be sold for Dh100.
If only they were flesh eaters.
It says something about my ignorance of what Saudi Arabia’s countryside is like that I can’t imagine what those locusts were finding to eat out in the deserts to get to their flying stage. But I suppose there has to be arable land to support the population.
“swards”?
Is that an amalgam of “swarms” and “herds”?
Of course I’ve heard of locusts.
Probably a typo, since it’s swarms in the title.

These locusts come from Somalia, fly across the Red Sea, and invade the Saudi peninsula from the south. They come in literally dense clouds and eat everything in their path.
Was in Yemen in 1986 when it happened. Had to stop my Toyota Land Cruiser on the road because my front windshield was all gooey with mashed locusts. Had a hell of a time scraping them off.
Not bad pan fried in their own fat.
Saw this last night
Good.
I understand Dubai *means* locusts.
