Mavericks owner Cuban under fire for comments touching on race

DALLAS (Reuters) - Outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban fended off social media criticism on Thursday for his "bigoted" response when asked at a business conference to address the controversy over banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Overcoming bigotry requires acknowledging internal prejudices, Cuban said in a video-recorded interview shown on Wednesday at the GrowCo convention hosted by Inc magazine.

"If I see a black kid in a hoodie and it's late at night, I'm walking to the other side of the street. And if on that side of the street, there’s a guy that has tattoos all over his face - white guy, bald head, tattoos everywhere - I’m walking back to the other side of the street," he said in the interview that was posted on the Internet.

Critics said his "hoodie" reference recalled the 2012 shooting of unarmed, black Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt when he was fatally wounded in a struggle with a man who said he feared for his life.Cuban defended his views on Twitter, saying that his quotes were not meant to advocate racism.

He didn’t say anything that Jesse Jackson hasn’t said.

I’m not a racist, but there is one Cuban that I hate.

Jesse Jackson has said the same thing so why no outrage when he says it..and Mark Cuban is right..if I see a black guy with a hoodie walking on my street I’m suspicious..every single robbery here in LA always involves some dude wearing a hoodie..would feel the same way if I saw a white guy full of tattoos walking around too

Wow!
How dare he!
That privileged honky-whitey-cracker!
Only blacks are allowed free speech in today’s Amerika.

Send him to a re-education camp, racial sensitivity training, anger management and for good measure, lock him up in a FEMA camp until he’s ready...

First thing I thought of was what Jesse Jackson said. Cuban was articulate, to the point, and correct.

when asked at a business conference to address the controversy over banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned reply - "No Comment"

for a rich guy like Cuban (and most others too) there is no benefit in giving one's opinions on race-relations extemporaneously to the media.

If the choice is between getting mugged and being called a racist, I’ll take the name calling.

Cuban needs to talk less about this. It’s a lose-lose proposition for those who do not or cannot learn to think critically. Stop fanning the flames. Magic Johnson may be writing somebody else a check to make trouble for you Cuban, so that he, the Saintly Magic (NOT!) can gobble up your sports portfolio at a cut rate price. Eventually, V-girl will stumble during one of her ‘I’m Not A Hooker” interviews, and if somebody write her an even bigger check, she will then ‘accidently’ implicate Magic, is what I expect.

” fatally wounded in a struggle with a man who said he feared for his life”
Translation: shot in self defense by a much smaller man who he was straddling and pounding his head against the sidewalk.

He didn’t say anything that Jesse Jackson hasn’t said.

That's correct. In '93, Jackson was quoted in the NY Times:

"There is nothing more painful to me at this stage of my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”

While I don’t condemn his response or his sentiment, whatever that really is, his response is indicative of the fact that you don’t have to have a whole lot of smarts to be too rich. Ha ha!

If I had that much money and someone asked me to comment on Sterling, I’d look the weasel reporter/reporterette in the face and say “Bite me.”

And any person who wants to live will do the same thing.
