My No-Soap, No-Shampoo, Bacteria-Rich Hygiene Experiment
NY Times ^ | 5/22/14 | Julia Scott

Posted on 05/24/2014 10:34:51 AM PDT by UnwashedPeasant

Summary: The writer is one of several subjects who go 28 days using a probiotic spray instead of using soap, shampoo and deodorant. It is a slow-growing, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria that competes with other bacteria on the skin. The result is healthier skin, free of breakouts. It is longer-lasting than, but not as acutely effective as, a recent traditional cleaning with soap. The friendly bacteria is useful for wound-healing and skin ailments, such as eczema. It causes a hundred-fold reduction in Propionibacterium acnes, which are often blamed for acne breakouts.

The writer had improved skin health, some unpleasant body odor and greasy hair, but no foot odor. After the experiment, the healthy bacteria was killed off after 3 traditional showers with soap. The inventor of the spray (branded "AOBiome") is an MIT-trained chemical engineer who has not showered for the past 12 years. He came up with the idea while trying to determine why horses like to roll in dirt.

Is it a different kind than out of the jar?

right out of the jar... it is called oil pulling... i also, on occasion, brush my teeth with it and baking soda together...

A steaming hot shower for 5 minutes. Dove soap and shampoo products. Followed by a 1 minute ice cold shower.

A shpritz of Arrid under each put and I am ready to go.

Why change something that has worked for many years?

"Your skin covered with chemicals. .poison to kill bacteria ...that were invented in the last hundred years..

Which is healthier?"

Don't know, but I plan to continue embracing the "chemicals and poison." I like being clean.

"Now, pigs don't sweat. Why do THEY like to roll in the dirt?"

My cat rolls in dirt.

Had a dog that rolled in dirt usually on something smelly.

Animals roll because they can and it's fun.

They also wear fur.

I quit washing my face and 30 years of acne cleared up. I mean that I went from constant acne treatments and flare-ups to zero zits. None.

Once a month I do have to exfoliate (gently) to clear dead skin. That’s it.

If only I’d know that it was so simple.

Don’t be offended Johnny, ya’ know I love you, but when I saw this thread I thought of you in experimental mode.

Even in -18F winter weather, when I was doing the mountain man thing, I managed to wash my long, luxurious hair, and clean the dirt and stench from my body.

Mind you, I didn't linger... standing on the porch pouring warm water over a naked body with temps at -18F will make one rush a bit, so that nothing important freezes off.

I used to stand on a farmhouse back porch and do the well pump cold gallon jug shower too. But not in those temps. Long luxurious hair??? Now we really need a picture, post it on the gardening thread. You have so many fans.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel with a new product.

I use baking soda wash for my hair, two or three times, and rinse really well, then use 1 tbls of apple cider vinegar in 1 qt water for rinse. Wonderful. PH balance is restored.

I still use deodorant, but looking for an alternative. I have sensitive skin. And I do agree hygeine is important.

Think about it...just what do you think your ancestors used 200 years ago....it wasn’t bottled shampoo from the grocery store. Homemade Lye soap was damaging to the skin...it would wash clothes, but I would not want to bathe in it.

Lavilin...deodorant...where do you buy that? I have used dead sea makeup before, very expensive. I don’t use much now.

I believe baking soda, apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide (food grade),olive oil and coconut oil etc. are some of the most important ingredients in our houses.

Pigs like to roll in mud because as the water in the mud evaporates it cools them. Just as if they did sweat.

I brush with baking soda too. Our ancestors used baking soda for soap and there are hundreds of uses for it...as well as apple cider vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide.

You can get Lavilin deodorant at Amazon.com or many local health-food stores.

I tried coconut oil (without corn starch, arrow root, etc.), and it worked great for a month or so. Then it stopped working completely. So you might have to use extra ingredients to keep it working.

Lavilin works great, but it is pricey. So it is worth trying coconut oil first.

as well as apple cider vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide.

i use these products as well! i actually add two tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar to black current juice every morning (M-F) and drink it... i also take a glass of water with juice from half a lemon every morning (again, M-F)... this has helped me with fighting off chronic sore throats and just about any illness that starts in the throat/nose...
