There is an internet site called WatchMojo.com. It has numerous top ten videos - top 10 Queen songs, top 10 nominated actors who never won an oscar , top ten Marvel movies, etc. I like going there to see various top 10 lists and such.
Yesterday while browsing through it, they had a Top 10 U.S. Presidents. I watched it to see if I would be disappointed and to no surprise, I was. Why?
Two things. One - President Reagan was not in their top 10. They had one term James Polk in there - #8 I believe - but no Reagan. The top 3 were #1 Lincoln, #2 FDR, #3 Washington. Second thing - when talking about FDR, they repeat the propaganda that FDR's government intervention and policies ended the Great Depression.
I may still go there from time to time, but it is disheartening to see the statists take over everything.
That is the way I feel about it. The more you learn about Washington (past all the stereotypical stuff) the more impressed you have to be.
I grant that you have a good legal position, but once the CSA fired on US positions then the Union had every right to invade as a foreign nation and committed a Casus belli. To be honest the CSA states were lucky to be treated as a rebellion instead of a foreign power for the most part.
In his book Rethinking the Great Depression (Chicago: Dee, 2002), Gene Smiley argues that the Depression actually continued well into the 1940's and contends that those who would otherwise be unemployed were in uniform, which created an illusion of prosperity. He argues that the Depression didn't really end until the government downsized itself after the war, when much of the New Deal and the wartime regulatory agencies were scrapped.

Actually, the war based economy was a false economy one dependent on government deficit spending and a depletion of the work force as a result of military service. The economy did not rebound on its own merits until well after WWII.
Well, FDR did his damnedest to get us into WWII, so does that count?

I disagree with Jefferson at number 2. His self imposed economic boycott of France and the UK nearly brought the country to ruin. It was one mistake, but boy was it a big one.

Jefferson had the vision of the country and he took giant steps to implement that. He was a great mana and a great president.
I remember JFK’s quote when he had some of his cabinet and advisors at the dinner table. “This is the most brain power we’ve had in this room since Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

Lists are arbitrary and a reflection of the person assembling it. Ignorant or informed, it's all the same. People who play that game never need to give any reason for their choices, cogent or otherwise.

Everything you say is correct. I’m just saying that Jefferson’s policy in regards with trade with Europe nearly ruined the country economically, and it was self imposed. A mistake of this magnitude should not be rewarded with a high ranking.
A matter of opinion. "nearly" only counts in horseshoes and atomic hand grenades.
Without the Louisiana Purchase the U.S. as history will know it, would not exist. I won't give reasons, but any informed adult would be able to figure that out.
In comparison, all "mistakes" pale by comparison.
