Teen finds WWII-era bazooka rocket, brings it to local authorities on his moped

A 16-year-old boy in Austria was at Wallersee, a large lake approximately 10 miles from the city of Salzburg, when he came across something peculiar – an old, rusted object. He picked it up, threw the item in his backpack, and then headed off on his moped to find some police officers. If he knew what he was carrying, however, he wouldn’t have been quite so cavalier. As the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reports, it was a World War II-era anti-tank missile.

The BBC, pointing to a report from Austrian news broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), notes that police were alarmed with what the teenager had brought them and immediately handed the projectile over to bomb disposal experts. Fortunately, the weapon couldn’t actually explode. Owen Lamprecht, spokesman for Landespolizeidirektion (Austria’s state police), told The Kronen Zeitung that it couldn’t explode because neither a fuse nor explosives were present.

Depends on whether or not the bazooka (the hollow tube and firing trigger) was loaded.

I wonder, if after the war when all the clean up of war equipment from both sides was in full swing, were the reporters as big a bunch of pansies as they are today? Without the projectile its nothing more than a tube and a very rusty one at that? My gut tells me no, they were not.

Since he threw it in his backpack, it isn't the tube, just the rocket.

From the photo in article, it looks like the head part of a panzerfaust projectile. It contained neither charge or fuse.

Some times, the "authorities" over react. A year or two ago, somebody fished out a PIAT launcher out of a river, and they treated it like an explosive.

It launched it's projectile via a spring. I suppose if the spring was compressed, and something was weakened by rust, it could do some damage.

Looks more like a Panzerfaust warhead than a Bazooka warhead.

Yep, it's a Panzerfaust 60 projectile.
