I regard the use of "no regrets" as being actively flippant and narcissistic. Fallible humans, serious people with consciences--should have regrets!
There have been many commencement speeches with this fatuous line.
What do the armchair philosophers here on FR think of it, where it came from and how can anyone be so arrogant as to expect to make no mistake, never be foolish, or always excuse and dismiss the hard lessons that come with regret?
It’s like ‘No problem’ for thank you, or ‘Whatever ...’ when you’ve destroyed one in argument, (just before they call you a racist).
It’s right up there with Frank Sinatra and Elvis-— “I Did It My Way”.
The lyrics say: “Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way”
How’s that for hutzpah, mumbo jumbo narcissism all in one-— just like a “mob guy” the chicago way and hillary too LOL.
Which is.. a lot of difference to people of conscience.
It translates to “no accountability”
an earlier song by the same title, recorded by Billie Holiday in 1936
No regrets
Although our love affair has gone astray
No regrets
I know I’ll always care though you’re away
So now our happy romance ended suddenly
Still in my heart you’ll be forever mine
No regrets
Because somebody new looks good to you
No regrets
Sweetheart no matter what you say or do
I know our love will linger
When the other love forgets
So I say goodbye with no regrets
No regrets
Because somebody new looks good to you
No regrets
Sweetheart no matter what you say or do
I know our love will linger
When the other love forgets
So I say goodbye with no regret
Narcissism and lack of a moral compass in one’s life will result in a “no regrets” attitude.
