8 stars whose box-office draw is nosediving
NY Post ^ | 06.14.2014

With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.

Thanks for the review. I can’t say that I am a fan either, but I have enjoyed some of his movies. I’ll give this one a try.

The side by side photo of Tom Cruise (51)and George Clooney (53). They are about the same age yet George looks to be in his 70’s and that is with the airbrushing and makeup.

EOT is doing well internationally, which is where the big studios make most of their money now. Clooney and Damon have never opened a movie in their careers, though GC is valuable in a supporting role (GRAVITY). Sandler’s last pic was apparently not coarse enough for his fan base.

Clooney and Depp can't disappear soon enough--arrogant know-it-alls, both.

I think the problem with “Edge of Tomorrow” was that after massive advertising campaign advertising — people felt like they’d already seen the movie.

Saw “Oblivion” on TV

Loved the Jetsons house.

Would live there if it came furnished with the gal with the British accent.

I know. I never did see his box office draw. The two or so movies I paid to see him in were horrible - especially HIM in them.

For me, when Cruise is on screen, it is Cruise all the time, only Cruise, Cruise, Cruise, Cruise.

He’s not good at being part of an ensemble.

Who wants to watch a movie where the theme is the hero dying over and over again?

It’s been a long standing Hollywood gossip. In Hollywood, if it’s rumour, there is a reason for it.

Remember Sandler on SNL when he would sing those ridiculous songs in that ridiculous voice? I would turn off the sound until he was finished.

There are only two actors I am aware of where overexposure seems impossible. Gene Hackman and Robert Downwy Jr.

Tom Cruise was OK in A Few Good Men (as were others),Colin Farrel was outstanding as King George...the rest are all nobodies to me.I can count on two hands the films made after 1995 that I’ve seen.

61 years a movie fan, so here my $2 worth.

I like Vaughn and Crowe.

My wife and I discussed going to Noah and she decided an adamant no. I schlepped down one Monday early show. Horrible movie. Not commenting on biblical accuracy, but just as entertainment. And Crowe portrays Noah as somewhat of a villain on the ark especially as he seems to misinterpret God’s intent. I think the writers and director made up a plot line and it seemed like it didn’t fit.

Anyway, not a movie I would recommend. I think it did ok worldwide, but did not spark Crowe’s career, especially in the states.

Cruise is really tanking and I don’t know if he can stop it. He’s still got that million dollar smile and movie star looks,. I think his life has turned the fans off. Don’t know if he can shake out of it.

Clooney is a genuine movie star. He will always have some appeal, just needs to get good writing. Some of his movies have been very entertaining. He has two gears, serious and comedy. Maybe a rom-com to spice it up. I thought he was good with Catherine-Zeta Jones. I see him as a modern day Cary Grant.

Damon was good as Bourne, but others can play those parts. Look for the new Captain Kirk to be around for awhile, star term and other flicks.

Hard to separate the stars from political views. Wish they all work and be quiet.

I don’t think Vince Vaughn and Adam Sandler are liberals. More libertarian/conservative.
