The Reign Of Windows At Work 'Is Coming To An End' And Macs Are Rising Fast

It's been clear for some time that the iPad has taken the enterprise by storm as employees tote it to work and companies buy fleets of them. But Apple's PC, the Mac, has never been as dominant in the workplace, until now, according to new research from long-time Microsoft rival, VMware.

VMware queried 376 IT professionals and found that they are increasingly being asked to buy and/or support Macs in the enterprise by employees who want Macs, not Windows machines.

"Microsoft Windows has dominated enterprise desktops for close to three decades but it appears its reign is coming to an end. As BYOPC ["Bring Your Own PC"] and BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] continue to transform the enterprise, Macs have become a popular and preferred option compared to Windows PCs," says Erik Frieberg, VP of Marketing, End-User Computing, VMware, in the report.

Windows 9 will be the answer for all.
I use Oracle VM VirtualBox. It is free. https://www.virtualbox.org/

Just install then put a OS cd in or point it to a ISO you downloaded then install. Opens like any program. Click on the OS you want and it starts up in any size window you want.

Download the Windows ISO if you want here:

Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

Walkthru on using it:
http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/

I installed Windows 8 in a virtual window. I can from time to time see why I do not like it.

I had 8 on a laptop for less then a month then when I could stands it no more I switched back to Windows 7.

Get Office 365 cheap. About $30 with cd. Otherwise download (cannot save file, it installs as it goes) for $10
http://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/chooser.aspx?culture=en-US

This does not require the $99 renewal each year. One time payment. The company I work at is on the list that Microsoft gives a discount to. See if your company is listed.

“I’m betting the first company to make a formally-verified general-purpose consumer OS will have a tremendous opportunity to seize the market; the same with the first formally-verified fully-functional word-processor.”

Bingo.

That would be a company to invest in.

I'm sure my IT department would love to have to add another device to support.

And there you have it, it is all about the IT guys not wanting to switch, they can be absolute tyrants.

I’m running Revit, not AutoCAD. Last I knew, Autodesk has not ported Revit to Apple.

Oh & I have a little Lenovo S10 that has a virus, so not working. Cute, convenient, utterly worthless. I got tired of struggling with viruses, constantly.

ever thought about Linux?

"So, why are [Macs] not YET as ubiquitous in the office as Windows based computers?"

For that answer, all you have to do is read a couple ( couple) of Mac threads here on FR.

I know of no other product line or company, against which is arrayed such a rabid array of (?professional?) FUD and hatred generators.

Mac users, in general, seem to be happy with their choices. Why that upsets a nasty segment of the populace -- who, apparently, equate happiness with homosexuality, etc. -- is beyond me. They'll almost certainly be here on this thread; perhaps someone should ask them to explain the root cause of their maniacal hatred...

Paid Microsoft marketing shills? ¿Quien sabe?...

Today, Tiger Direct has a low-end Windows 7 on sale for $99

It’s a Core 2 thing with 1.8 ghz processor and 2 GB RAM and only an 80GB hdd. But the price and Windows 7 sure make it more attractive.

Even as a back-up.

Well my webserver that i maintain is a Linux Apache Mysql Php box and I see absolutely zero reason to go back to Microsoft

I'll give two:
MySQL
PHP

Of course there's better DB & language options on Linux as well: FireBird and Ada come to mind.

"RE: I have found that any MS PC has a shelf-life of about 18-24 months before key components start to fail."

"How about Macs?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I bought this 17" Macbook Pro in 2005, and use it 8-10 hours per day. Except for worn spots on the keyboard, it still looks -- and works -- just fine. I did have to replace the battery right before my extended warranty ran out. BUT -- Apple replaced it FREE of CHARGE -- AND refunded most of my extended warranty fee, "because it never was used"....
I bought my previous PowerBook G4 -- sight unseen -- used, from a fellow FReeper, ca 2002 -- and used it the same way until I bought the 17" MBP. My wife still uses it several hours a day...
And those are laptops, that get lugged around, all over the country...
Howdy, randita!!
I mentioned you (obliquely) in my #71.
Your memory as to the date may be better than mine, but, yes, indeed, "your" G4 is still serving my wife well! many (years of) Thanks!!
TXnMA '-)
Tyrants, yeah that's it. So, we should support anything that comes down the road, never mind the fact that we are running a business and just because someone has a new toy, doesn't mean we're going to support it. We support over 400 Windows servers, now I'm supposed to support a MAC, does a MAC have WSUS or System Center to apply the patch Tuesday patches or push out software?
I'm dying to see how our proprietary software would run on a MAC in native mode, not running Windows 7 in a VM. Yet in a MAC world, that is perfectly OK, yes, spend more money for a MAC so I can run 7 in a VM, makes perfect business sense.
The bottom line, MACS are more expensive and they don't do anything special that would require creating an infrastructure to support them.
Boy, MAC fanboys are clueless and I like MACs.
Nice generalization to supports your MAC religion. Guess what, I am very happy with the PCs I've owned and I get to build them, too. Build any MACS lately? I know MAC users think they're on the cutting edge but you have to take whatever Apple sells you and like it. How hard is it to upgrade the motherboard on a MAC to extend its life, oh, that's right, you can't, you get to buy a new machine.
