Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies found a racketeer and a riddle when they pulled over a van in Metairie two months ago. The racketeer was Joe Gagliano, the 55-year-old son of a reputed New Orleans mob underboss. The riddle was what he was doing in a van outfitted with what appeared to be gun ports, with a sniper rifle and silencer inside.
Late one night a patrol deputy got a tip from a "credible and reliable source" that there was a van with stolen plates, driving on Metairie Road near the Orleans Parish line.
When they pulled over the van, deputies found a loaded .22-caliber rifle with scope wrapped in a piece of carpeting in the back, and a black metal cylinder -- a silencer -- lay in a side compartment, a May 7 arrest report says.
Wooden kitchen chairs were mounted in the cargo area, facing out sliding glass windows that had been installed behind the driver's seat and in one of the back windows. Other windows in the back of the van had been painted over. Underneath a sandbag that was holding one of the chairs in place, deputies found 8 feet of "cannon fuse."
The driver of the van, 72-year-old Dominick Gullo, was booked with possession of stolen property -- the license plate -- and posted bond. Gagliano was "allowed to depart," the report states.
Five weeks later, however, both men were charged in federal court with weapons offenses. They've been in federal custody since.
Mandeville Police Chief Rick Richard saw a report about the arrest more than a month later on television, and he was puzzled. "I have heard it called a 'sniper van,' but I don't know what to make of that," he said.

I fire .22 Aquila SS from my AR conversion and the clack of the bolt is louder
than the round. Quieter than a cap gun with just the flash suppressor.
Fired from inside a room it would be 100% silent.
Put a shallow pan of ammonia under the house and save your ammo for more important things
Yup ... the 1 in 9 twist works nicely for the Aquila SS 60 grain bullet.

Around the ‘60s-’70s, nutria were becoming very invasive in the warm waters of the power plant at Mountain Creek lake in West Dallas TX. The workers at the power plant would eat their brown bag lunches on the higher sloped hillside, while using their scoped 22 rifles to kill the nutria. Fun was had by all.
Evidently it must have made a difference because people around here do not see them near as much as they used to.

22lr ain’t reliable on gator in my opinion. Gonna need something bigger than .30 diameter with a ft-lb of over 200. Gators have tough skulls. You can take them down with a good hit but I’d rather be sure and use a better round.
Not quite true. My recollection is that Chief Moose (black) had the county police running around looking for a white van. Police outside his jurisdiction put the puzzle together and began to suspect John Allen Muhammad (black). I believe they put out a profile. A trucker spotted the car at a rest stop and called in the cops.
It will get rid of most mammals ( including humans*). They don’t like the smell of urine ( ammonia) and will leave.
* I’ve often planned on taking a shopping trip or two day vacation when placed there. Have gotten rid of flying squirrels. Opossum and coons.
Perhaps not what we typically think of as a sniper rifle, but sniping is sniping even at 100 yards or less....
I have more trouble labeling the vehicle as a sniping van - it sounds more like a comfort-oriented recreational vehicle for firearms aficionados....
A silenced .22lr in a bustling urban setting fired from the cover of a vehicle stopped at an intersection could be very effective.
I agree with you, and MaxMax on the performance characteristics of the .22, it's many variations and it's ability to be lethal at a minimal distance.
But, really, the 22LR is not a sniper round, nor is that rifle a sniper rifle set up, in the sense of what the story is attempting to convey, agreed? The sensationalism of the article [and story] are buffered by the admission in later paragraphs that the caliber selection is more of an afterthought of setting up a mobile rig with a port to take pop shots at.... whatever.
That set up, with that caliber is a critter-gitter, at best. So, the emphasis of my original statement, that this is a seriesly (sp) all-around odd story was my intent.
