Could Israeli high-tech tackle Hamas’ terror tunnels?

Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system has been highly visible protecting its airspace during Operation Protective Edge. But exactly how the military is locating Hamas’ labyrinth of underground tunnels between Israel and Gaza – and whether it is using new technologies to uncover them – remains a closely held secret.

“Due to security concerns, we cannot specify the tools or methods used to uncover these tunnels. Exposing our capabilities would hamper our ability to address this lethal threat,” an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokeswoman said in an email to FoxNews.com. “However, using precise intelligence combined with specialized units which use robots and advanced cameras, the IDF has had vast success in toppling the Hamas tunnel network.”

The scale and sophistication of the Hamas tunnels present a massive challenge to the IDF, which launched Operation Protective Edge on July 8 in response to an escalation in rocket attacks by Hamas. The ground phase began on July 17.

It doesn’t take much high tech to wipe out terrorists in tunnels. All Israel has to do is make Cyanide bombs, plug the openings and if anybody is in the tunnel, they are dead. My dad did this when he wanted to wipe out gophers.

But none of the gophers had respiratory protective devices I assume(?!). Some of the terrorists may have, so I suggest rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat.

Low tech solution to stop Hamas from using the tunnel!

Rovers could be redesigned to navigate very long tunnels and to stop near the origin shaft for a more effective delivery of some kind of incendiary or chemo agent.

Gas mask filters have a limited effective life. For many types, get them wet and they are useless.

OTOH, you could start dumping dry ice into the tunnels, and state that it’s part of Israel’s contribution to sequester carbon (in more ways than one).

"It doesn’t take much high tech to wipe out terrorists in tunnels."

First you have to find the tunnels. That is the hard part.

Pump natural gas into the tunnels. Throw in something that goes bang with a spark.

The entrances will be inside the buildings. Bring up the bulldozers.

As castle defenders discovered a thousand years ago, digging a tunnel is noisy unless the diggers use only spoons and brushes. Tunnel detection technology is well understood. Acoustic sensors along the border should have no difficulty detecting cross border tunneling attempts.

“How deep can that work?”

I don’t know. Perhaps someone who does can chime in?
