Cows Kill German Dog Walker in Austria

A 45-year-old German woman died when she was attacked by a herd of 20 cows and calves on Monday afternoon on an Alpine pasture in Tyrol's Stubaital valley.

Police said the woman was inside the fenced area with her dog on a footpath, when around 20 of the animals became agitated and charged her.

Rescuers attempted to resuscitate the woman on the spot for 45 minutes, but she finally succumbed to her injuries, said the ÖAMTC Air Ambulance.

According to police, the herd probably took exception to the dog, as many cows see them as threats to their calves.

The animals are said to have previously not been known for aggressive behavior, according to a local witness.

There was a recent similar incident with a hiker, which ended without injury, police said.

When I was about 8 or so, my gramma’s psycho, 3 horned milk cow, named Blue Eyes, got out of the pasture and ran my poor little Poodle, Fifi through the potato patch, with me running and crying behind them and gramma bringing up the rear, screaming.

Just as Blue Eyes lowered her head to put one of her evil horns through Fifi, the dog doubled back and shot through the fence.

I hated that demon cow.

I call bull hocky on this (no pun intended).

Cows are the most docile and dumb creatures walking. Even if a dog is around.

A good reporter would ask if a bull was in the pasture also.

Nope.

Grew up around ‘em.

Whether intentionally done or not, they caused more injuries than any of the other livestock, even pigs.

I have read enough on this board to know that you know your stuff.

But our experiences evidently are very different. I, also, was raised around cattle...pigs...goats...chickens...guineas...horses...you name it.

In fact, until four years ago (or so) I raised cattle. The drought pretty well put an end to that. Too expensive to have any kind of profit. If we have another year like this one...I might get back into it. Although, I’m getting older and I’m not sure I want that much work. This hiatus has spoiled me.

The only problem I ever had with the cattle was them getting tangled in the fence...or worse breaking thru it. I’ve had a lot more injuries from horses. :)

Now bulls...that is a different subject.

BTW, your taglines always crack me up!!

According to police, the herd probably took exception to the dog, as many cows see them as threats to their calves.

No doubt the cattle saw her as a bipedal canine threat multiplier and acted accordingly.

BTW, when posting, please lose the distracting links (or at least code them as links). E.g., What do Germans think of Austrians? Vass not Onkel Adolf from zhere‽

This ranch has been in the family since 1888, since the first cattle operation started there has been 7 deaths due to cattle. The first was my great grandfather.

Laugh all you want, but if you work with them long enough you can “read” the cow’s body language. I’ve backed away from many a cow when she went into defense mod.

It amazes me that some consider cows slow, dumb and harmless.

I’m sorry for your loss.
