Cows Kill German Dog Walker in Austria

A 45-year-old German woman died when she was attacked by a herd of 20 cows and calves on Monday afternoon on an Alpine pasture in Tyrol's Stubaital valley.

Police said the woman was inside the fenced area with her dog on a footpath, when around 20 of the animals became agitated and charged her.

Rescuers attempted to resuscitate the woman on the spot for 45 minutes, but she finally succumbed to her injuries, said the ÖAMTC Air Ambulance.

According to police, the herd probably took exception to the dog, as many cows see them as threats to their calves.

The animals are said to have previously not been known for aggressive behavior, according to a local witness.

There was a recent similar incident with a hiker, which ended without injury, police said.

I thank God that your luck was different from what happens around here.

There are a lot of beef herds that pretty much stay in pastures, breeding and feeding without any human interference until it comes time for market.

The cattle tend to be “wild” and not very inclined to load up on trucks.

[could just be that the mountains have made us *all* crazy]

;D

After reading this thread I think you must be right about being lucky. It’s either luck or I’ve been around cattle that are slow witted all my life. :) I’ve always been able to traipse around pastures and attracted no negative attention. Several years ago I had 6 dogs that decided it was tremendous fun to “run” the cattle ‘round and ‘round the pastures. It took some doing to break them of this game they had invented.

The only creature I was ever scared of was a rooster my folks had when I was growing up. He was crafty and mean as all get out. I rejoiced the day he went to that great coop in the sky.

A cow can be mean and aggressive, we have had a few that were. But this story says that the whole herd attacked, that is unusual. Usually they would run away.

I never knew that.

Worked on dairy farms from the age of 14 through 18 and only ever came across docile cows. Never had a problem with them.

Agree...it would be really odd for a whole herd to attack.

Myself...I guess I have been lucky all these years and had docile cattle. I have been around crazy dogs, cats, parrots, horses, mean billie goats, chickens...well you get my drift.

I sure don’t doubt that a cow might be rogue...but I’ve never owned one. Thank goodness!!

Lol, nice to see you Kenny and got a 'kick' out of your post. You are very 'punny', hehe.

But - I've got a story to tell you about COWS, and it was scary!

When my kids were little we had horses and needed another used saddle. I called a man about one and he said he had one but it was in a 'shed' out in a pasture and I could go and look at it.

So I drove out there, left my kids in the locked car [cool weather!], climbed the fence and walked way out the pasture to the shed. Took a look at the saddle and when I came out of the shed it was surrounded by cattle!!

Turns out the food was kept in the shed and they thought I was there to feed them. So - all these cattle are mooing, snorting and grunting and I didn't know what to do, lol. I needed to get back to my kids but was frankly scared.

Pondered for a bit and finally decided I had to try so I started walking through them and thankfully they didn't smush me and when I got through the last of them I started running for the fence. A few of them even turned and started to follow me.

This is what they looked like without a fence between them and me........

Lol, it really was! I’ve bottle fed and raised a couple in my pasture, but a whole hungry herd is another thing, haha.
I thought you might enjoy that story.

You are lucky. Damned lucky. If the owner of those cows had seen any of this, I shudder to think of the consequences, and that’s no bull.

Our cows see our truck and start running up to us. They know we usually have cubes to throw out for them. Stampede!

I do think it is intimidating, to be surrounded by these beasts.

Lol, it was frightening because I hadn’t been around whole herds of cattle. Plus I was wanting to get back to my kids in the car. It was an ‘experience’ for sure!
