More than 1.6 million Americans do not have indoor plumbing.

What a stink!

Turns out more than a one-and-a-half million Americans are without indoor plumbing.

According to the latest American Community Survey, nearly 630,000 occupied households lack complete plumbing facilities.

It means that they are without one or more of the following: a toilet, a tub or shower, or running water.

Just sixty years ago a quarter of American homes had no flushing toilet.

So who doesn't have a flushing toilet?

Counties containing Indian reservations have astonishingly high percentages of households without plumbing.

14 percent of households in Shannon County, South Dakota don't have full plumbing.

In Apache County, Arizona., the rate is more than 17 percent.

Sparsely-populated census areas in Alaska also have very high percentages.

Counties along the Rio Grande in Texas have high rates of unplumbed households.

There are also homes in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia too.

In 1990, although homes that were without plumbing numbered less than 3 per cent across the entire United States, 12 per cent of properties in Arkansas were without flushing toilets.

Try installing a septic tank and drain field into permafrost - it's impossible in the bush and that's why they use honey buckets.
Could we ask the limeys what portion of their population have teeth that look like baked beans?

Nothing wrong with using an outhouse. Only problem is your children will be teased by other children at school and this can definitely be an issue. I knew a family who had this problem

I was in Europe a few decades and in a major city, Copenhagen. I visited friends in a 6 story apartment building. You had to take a sheeeeeet downstairs in an outbuilding that had plumbing. And in the UK there were still public baths for those who lacked one.

I cannot say for sure all units were set up like this but my friends was

I once went to Africa, and I kid you not... in this city the people did NOT even have outhouses. Nope, they just found a spot and pooped right out there in an open field next to the city.

No covering up with dirt or anything!

That is surprising! Our house in India had indoor flush toilets in early 1940’s! And we had elctricity, city sewers, and a rotary dial telephone. But no refrigerators. So food had to be cooked fresh every meal and any left overs were discarded because of the hot weather.

Shannon County, South Dakota IS the Pine Ridge Reservation. There is not even a county seat.

Call this racist if you wish, but a friend who have been there confirm that much of the housing (federal gov’t provided) has been destroyed by the inhabitants. Winter is very cold in SD and when the furnace first goes out, they don’t call the HVAC contractor. Instead they open a couple of windows and start a fire in the living room. So not having indoor plumbing is almost a given.

Lots and lots older homes in the usa do not have a shower....everything else they have...

Are these homes included in the total...or is this a case of moronic reporters who can’t critically think beyond the eight grade...

There are things like composting toilets, but you can’t have one. Code won’t allow it.

I’m buying a house where the water was cut off. Apparently the occupants lived there without it so they filled the toilets to the tippy-top. (They smashed the windows and walls on their way out too.)

It’s not a society problem. There are plenty of homeless who use the streets and allies. I was in downtown Seattle when a homeless guy turned to a plate glass window and relieved himself.

Like so much of life & society, there comes a point where one must be willing to do the work ... and some aren’t. Assistance can only go so far if the intended recipient isn’t willing.

I’m reminded of a missionary in a third-world country: he found a rope & tire, and made a swing for the local children to enjoy - and enjoy they did. On occasion, the knot came undone, they would tell him, and he would tie it back up again to their delight. Circumstances took a bad turn and he was obligated to leave for a few years. Upon his return, the locals swarmed him and took him to the swing. There he found the rope & tire, untied, on the ground. The parts had lain there for years, no local willing to re-tie it.

I didn’t read your story until I’d posted mine but what you describe is absolutely consistent with what I’ve been told. In one sense, I give them credit for adapting what they were given in order to survive. All the modern conveniences are not part of their lifestyle and they really don’t care much when they are absent.

Mexico has toilets but none of them work. K”

Back in the early 1980’s we drove from Kansas south to the west coast of Mexico. I remember going through several towns that had electric lights on rusted metal poles that didn’t work because they didn’t have any power. When we stopped to get gas one of the men working at the station spoke a little English and I asked him about them. He said, “Soon. It’s only been 5 years but it will be soon.”

I agree. It sounds like the reporter is being really stupid.

Yes, some people in the Boonies don’t have indoor toilets... so what?

Have no fear, all the illegals streaming across the border wiill have toilets. The only problem will be to teach them how to flush and put the seat up.

Gee let's find out how many in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Etc., or do we only care about America? Maybe these folks as a whole don't have a problem with it because they like the way they live, where they live. Or are we now to have a new Universal Service Fee so that not only are we paying to provide internet but also indoor plumbing to rural areas. Remember now it only feels like tax, it's really just a fee.

That’s what I was thinking too. BTW, here in the Fairbanks interior region of Alaska dry cabins are quite common. Why? Cheaper living, people choose it. It’s a way of life for many people. It’s not a big deal. There are places for showers easily accessible, and Laundromats, I know some people who have old fashioned washing machines too.

Balance that statistic with how many stone age goat fornicators eschew the use of toilet paper, preferring to use their left hand.

See how civilized WE are?
