Holy smokes — that thing is supposed to be man-rated isn’t it?

NASA rocket explodes during launch at Wallops Island

This was not a "NASA Rocket." This is Orbital Sciences operating under a NASA contract. This is the "cheap, reliable, commercial alternative" to NASA-led programs that FReepers always hail as superior.

I guess nobody's perfect.

That’s right. Nasa only creates powerpoint presentations anymore.

This actually utilizes Russian engines, which will no doubt get the blame.

Disappointing turn of events.

Stood outside yesterday evening waiting for a chance to see the rocket (far downrange from New England), but the boat in the wrong place caused it to be postponed.

Today it's overcast, so I would not have been able to see it anyway, but still kinda sucks.

A mishap occurred shortly after liftoff. Orbital has declared a contingency. NASA and Orbital are still determining when a press conference will be held.

That's one hell of a 'contingency'.

ROckets blow up sometimes. It’s a fact of life. I fail to see the advantage of how blowing up an expensive NASA diversity rocket would be better than blowing up a cheaper one.

Went to the beach by me - watched the ignition on
NASA tv on the phone and immediately turned it
off and set the timer for the minute and fifty seconds
they said it would take to see it. Waited and waited, finally
walked home.

Can we do anything right in this country anymore?

Judging from the video, it does look like an explosion of one of the engines. This looks like one of the worst possible outcomes, the engine failure dropped the fully fueled rocket right back down on the launch pad. The launch facility will likely have a lot of damage.

Orbital sciences is one of the companies that won the contract to supply the ISS. Their competitor is SpaceX. Their first flight to the ISS went flawlessly.

Yes, rockets do blow up sometimes. All I'm saying is this was not a NASA rocket, and the first several commenters blaming NASA were not being factually correct.

At least it didn’t cost as much as the Obamacare website.

It’s cargo — insurance will cover it.

If this were a manned mission, it would be a big deal.

Let’s launch another rocket tomorrow!

The government ain't "we". NASA is just another bunch of parasitic bureaucrats.

Is this the craft using the cheap, surplus and very old Russian engines?
