No, Thank YOU!

There is nothing funny about this. Lives could have been lost, people could have been hurt, but thank the Good Lord it is only property damage - which can be repaired. Even the burning marshes will grow back.

...

Not very likely. The launch area is cleared and there is a destruct mechanism in case the rocket goes off course.

Scientific and student educational experiments, a ham radio satellite, and various resupply items - see http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/files/Orbital_CRS3_mission_overview.pdf

The meteor monitoring experiment was a particularly interesting one.

Do you live near Wallops? Are you familiar with the area?

I live here, I know the launch area is cleared - the launch was scrubbed Monday because some idiot in a sailboat hadn’t cleared the area. Local word is the destruct mechanism was engaged.

No, but nobody was in danger. The fact that the launch was cancelled because of the boat should tell you how careful they are.

Did you notice how he banked the plane away from the explosion? I wonder if he felt the shockwave, too.

Good, clean, safe, fun watching that thing explode on my big screen in the living room.

I know damned well how careful they are - I've been there, I have friends who work there and were there tonight.

...but nobody was in danger.

You have no knowledge of that. While every attempt is made to ensure the safety of everyone, there are no guarantees.

Debris is being found on Chincoteague and Assateague. Marshes were burning - marshes at the edges of the mainland.

90 minutes after the fact we had to take the long way home because roads were still closed. My daughter was at dance class in Maryland and friends who live near Wallops were unable to go home.

Please do not try to tell me I don't know what I do know.

I'm here, you're not.

The news stories seem to support my account. Some debris may wash up on shore. Nobody was in any danger.

The haters are out. You’re right and they are wrong. How ignorant of them to dismiss the enormous effort that goes into safety. This is tragic for everyone involved. Sure the politics of NASA should be debated and there is a time and place for that. But right now, while the fires still burn and the questions are unanswered, a little humanity can go a long way. Unless you’re a hater.

The unverified rumor is that the rocket was an Antares, but the ENGINE was RUSSIAN.

That makes a lot of sense. The WSJ article didn’t have any information about the make of the engine, but the rumor is it was Russian.

Someone earlier made a comment that ‘The only think NASA makes any more are PowerPoint presentations.’

Lot of truth to that.

That the engine was Russian made is no surprise — most of US launches are done with the Russian made RD-1 kerosene engine.

If the Russians withheld those engines, the US launch program would be drastically curtailed. The US is nearly totally dependent on Russian good will to get into space. So far have we fallen.

It was an Orbital Science Corp assembled Antares vehicle and Cygnus capsule, using the NASA facility at Wallops Is, Va.

The only so-called surprise was the Cygnus was carrying a classified crypto device - most likely for encrypted up and down link communications.

The primary problem is liability. Sociopolitical environment now is severe blame and punishment for anything less than zero-risk perfection. Yeah, guys with slide rules brought back astronauts on a damaged spacecraft ... but the situation happened in an environment where everyone involved knew someone could very well die doing this without crucifying anyone blame could stick to; the imperative was DO IT. Today, every little thing has to be proven perfect at exorbitant cost, with the DO IT goal far down the priority list, somewhere below "don't run out of TP".

“The Soviets, however, perfected the metallurgy behind this method.”

Apparently not.

I was down there on Monday for the scrub. I'm quite thankful I wasn't there for the launch.

THANK YOU, Gabz, for putting so many people in their deserved place.
