Thank you...your friend had the right attitude AND the talent, which goes a long way in the NFL. There are more than a few marginal players who manage to make the roster each year because they work their butts off and know how to act like a professional athlete. No sense of entitlement and they know their spot on the roster is determined by what the do on the field—not some award they won in college.
I’m also guessing the team told your friend to stay in contact because the coaching staff saw something the first time around. My impression is that Sam did not demonstrate the right attitude in St. Louis or Dallas; that, along with the fact that he’s too small to play inside at DT and not tall enough (or fast enough) for DE are the reasons he isn’t in the NFL. Someone ought to ask Sam if either the Rams or the Cowboys (or any other NFL team) asked him to stay in touch, or plan to invite him to next year’s training camp. The real answer is “no.” They’ve seen enough of Mr. Sam and his NFL career is over.

In the NFL, the only question asked is, can you help us win? If the answer is yes, you play. The answer for Sams was no. Had it been yes, he would be on a team a la Michel Vick, Plax Burris, Ray Lewis etal.

When it came down to the "rubber meets the road" his football skills were lacking and his gayness wouldn't buy him much on the field. He had his chance and he knew he had to prove himself. He was never a contender. It was a business decision and social experiment that did not in end in anyone's favour.
If the NFL had never drafted him in the first place based on his skills or whatever, he would have said the same thing. Get over it. I hear the networks are looking for a gay sports announcer. Maybe they will hire him.

Incorrect, Mr. Sam. You’re not in the NFL because you don’t have the skills to play linebacker in the NFL, which requires surprisingly smart players.

Maybe he should try the CFL. They’re liberal up there, so if he’s good enough for them, then he can make a case.
