That would be Lili Marlene, a semi-popular song during WWII. “Underneath the lamplight, by the garden gate, etc., etc,

Like the old story of a GI and German found ‘beaten up’ in the middle of the road.

He explained that he and a German soldier ran into each other and the German yelled “Roosevelt is an A hole” and the American yelled “Hitler is an A hole”.

The guy went on

- No - no fight, we were standing in the middle of the road sharing a cigarette and shaking hands when a truck hit us.

I just watched the movie. The basic tenet is true, but all the dialogue seemed contrived, with the German officer coming straight out of central casting.

Sigh. The story itself would have been adequate and would have made a great movie.

It is like the mini-series done back in the late Seventies or early Eighties based one of my favorite books, “Once an Eagle”. My wife found it in a library, I never knew one had been made. I was very, VERY disappointed. How could a mini-series with Sam Elliot as Sam Damon be bad, but it was. They deviated so far from the book for no reason I could see.

Same with the “Silent Night” movie.

Sounds like the exchange Bill Mauldin wrote about in Guadalcanal Diaries (I think) where some GI shouts to the Jap lines:

"Tojo sucks!"

Jap line shouts back:

"Roosevere suck!"

GI (likely Republican) shouts back:

"Damn right he does!"

“Linda Hamilton: John Connor’s mother, small arms expert and cha cha dancer.”

And sadly bi-polar. She said that it destroyed her first marriage. Apparently she was so physically abusive to her fist husband that he left her when she was pregnant. Thankfully she got treatment.
