I never thought that Alvin Lee was singing a tribute to socialism, but rather it was a social commentary about his society's progressive decay and decline in socialism.

Basically, I just wing it and I was/am fairly naive about such things, so you could be right it being a tribute.

As a social commentary on progressive society, it's still a bit of an anthem for me, at least as far as I understand it.

I see British society in his song as the dying canary in the progressive coal mine. It started on them first, now it's got US:

I'd Love to Change The World
Alvin Lee

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Add to that ABBA’s “One man, one woman.” Ironic since ABBA tends to be a “gay” icon.

I know that early Journey material was de facto banned from airplay once Steve Perry joined the group.

Can't have people hearing stuff like this!

Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side

Obvious inappropriate reference to Women of Color.

Burton Cumming's Glamour Boy

Glamour boy
Get your costume on, you got 'em lined up, waitin' for you
Glamour boy
You got 'em standin' in the aisles so don't hang 'em up
For twenty-five thousand dollars you can look like a woman tonight
For twenty-five thousand dollars, I think it'll work out right

It offends the follicle less endowed women.

I never hear it on the radio anymore.
