Willacy County authorities say Juvenito Gonzales was cutting grass in Raymondville on Tuesday afternoon when he was fatally stung. Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence says the noise of the tractor likely stirred up the bees.

Africanized honey bees. Killer bees are not just an SNL skit.

I mow around my bee hives all the time and have never been stung. What state is this? Those were some pretty aggressive bee’s.

My thought as well. Normal hive’s don’t want to lose that many bee’s to an attack. They want to sting just enough to make the threat go away.

There was a car crash near here last year. One car struck a dead tree, and a swarm of bees came out and covered the woman driver. She ended up getting into a swimming pool across the street, only her nose showing. Got stung about a thousand times. The other driver got some stings. Fire Department came, foamed them, got her to the hospital. Never said that they were Africanized bees. We are in Southern California.

from the website:
Their defensive behavior is an evolutionary response to their many biological competitors, including honey badgers, bee eaters, and even humans, in their native range.
That explains the killer bees. Cause honey badgers don't care.

“I mow around my bee hives all the time and have never been stung. “

I had a hove in a Walnut tree. I got about 4 feet away, and they came after me! Got me too! Northern Ohio.

Back about forty years ago when KILLER BEES were the coming rage of doom and gloom, one scientist said not to worry. By the time the African bees got to the USA their ferocity would have been tempered by inbreeding with mild European bees.

Obviously it didn’t work.

Texas has the African bees called Killer Bees. They are far more agressive than normal bees. And produce more honey too. Where is Honey Badger when you need him?

Killer Bees are not in Ohio. They are in Louisiana and Texas. But they are known to swarm more. They send a larger percentage of the hive after their pray. And they keep stinging far longer. The only way to escape is to go indoors. If you go under water they will wait.

” By the time the African bees got to the USA their ferocity would have been tempered by inbreeding with mild European bees.”

It seems like the influence is going to other way, doesn’t it.
