It pays to check those musty old boxes in your attic.

An unidentified family in the Deep South made the discovery of a lifetime when they found a letter written by Founding Father Thomas Jefferson in which the third president extols the virtues of American independence and hails victory in the War of 1812.

“As in the Revolutionary War, [the British] conquests were never more than of the spot on which their army stood, never extended beyond the range of their cannon shot,” Jefferson wrote in the letter, penned at his Monticello home on Valentine's Day, 1815. "We owe to their past follies and wrong the incalculable advantage of being made independent of them. . . ”

Barf!

First off, lots of what GB did that this idiot writes of was BECAUSE of the Revolution.

I think that Canada, Aus, etc - all basically English-based peoples - owe the US their so-called independence. Never again did GB make that mistake. Instead they started ceding some autonomy to these pseudonations rather than losing their resources altogether. Much more amicable - because they don’t want to piss off their people ever again.

Never mind the slave and Indian stuff. GB itself was not heavily involved in slavery, just let it happen. For them it was no big deal, and seeing what was happening in the colonies, probably thought it wise to stop where it had been allowed.

As far as many Indians allying with GB, that was because GB was 1000 miles away. Indians of course had biggest trouble with their immediate neighbors. That does not mean more Brits coming in would not slaughter them. Anymore than it means French were nicer than English because they allied with French!

Actually, the British were heavily engaged in the slave trade. Most of the slaves in the Americas were transported by the British and Portuguese. Profits from the slave trade were one of the foundations of the wealth of the City of London.

The author is wrong about a lot of things but I would argue that if the US were still a British possession on the mid-1800's it would have delayed the abolition of slavery in the Empire. The abolitionists in the UK ridiculed the opposition by arguing that less sugar for tea from the West Indies plantations would be a small price to pay to abolish the evil of slavery. But the new textile industry was utterly dependent on American cotton, so much so that the British seriously thought about aiding the South.

N.B. The fact that slavery was not legal in the British Isles is as irrelevant as the fact it was illegal in Massachusetts. Neither place was suited for plantation agriculture. The key fact was that slavery was legal in the extremely valuable West Indies sugar islands, which meant abolition would come at steep price. To their credit, the Brits still did it a few years before we did.

The British abolished the slave trade in 1807, eight years before the Jefferson letter. It became unlawful to transport slaves in British bottoms (British merchant ships). The Royal Navy was very aggressive enforcing this ban.

The British abolished the slave trade in 1807,

...

Didn’t the US also abolish the import of slaves long before the Civil War?

Before we sanctify the Brits you should know that in the same year, 1807, the US also abolished the slave trade. The Brits didn’t abolish the practice of slavery until 1833 and did not end it in India until 1843.

During the Cold War, Vietnam allied with Russia, and Albania allied with China. Better a far away ally than one breathing down your neck. Now Vietnam is more friendly with us and involved in dangerous confrontations with China over islands in the South China Sea.

Don’t be a smart ass, it’s not becoming:

The Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves of 1807 (2 Stat. 426, enacted March 2, 1807) is a United States federal law that stated that no new slaves were permitted to be imported into the United States. It took effect in 1808, the earliest date permitted by the United States Constitution.
