Was Islam responsible for Columbus setting sail to find a sea route to India & China?

"There are but 155 years left...at which time...the world will come to an end," wrote Christopher Columbus in his book Libro de Las Profecias, composed in 1502 between his 3rd and 4th voyages.

Columbus continued:

"...The sign which convinces me that our Lord is hastening the end of the world is the preaching of the Gospel recently in so many lands."

Though his predictions were off, Columbus revealed his motivation for setting sail on his first voyage AUGUST 3, 1492, with the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria.

He sought to find a sea route to India and China as the Islamic Ottoman state had closed off the land routes 40 years earlier.

The background of the Islamic state occupying large areas of Europe began when Muslim crusaders, called "Moors," invaded Spain in 711 AD.

With a cavalry of 80,000, Moors wielding curved scimitar swords, "went through all places like a desolating storm."

The Mozarabic Chronicle, 754 AD, recorded that thousands of churches were burned and: "God alone knows the number of the slain."

In 846 AD, just 46 years after Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome's old St. Peter's Basilica, 11,000 Muslims on 73 ships invaded Rome and sacked the Basilica.

Indeed. Add to that the carnal nature of the Islamic afterlife, which is such effective bait that the concept could only have come from Satan himself.

So the world ended in 1657.

The Ottoman victory over the Byzantine Empire did not cut off trade to the east per se but it inserted a middleman who charged exorbitant taxes. Some European countries cut deals with the Ottomans but as you can imagine that would have been difficult for Spain who had just vanquished the last Islamic state in the Iberian Peninsula. Plus, there was much unrest and at times war in the Ottoman eastern borderlands that disrupted trade.

It made a lot of sense for the Spanish to take a flyer on that guy who claimed you could travel to Asia by sailing West instead of East.

Yes.

He proposed finding an alternative route to the Silk Road, which was controlled by Moslems...

A look at the map explains it. Europeans knew where China and India were since Alexander the Great. There was even a road called the Silk Road that linked Europe, and Asia. However, since the early Islamic days, the silk road travelled through Islamic territory.

Look at all the voyages on the map. They avoid one area completely, and that's the silk road route east to Asia.

Absolutely. Merchants and armies to support them were getting slaughtered overland. Human history as been a slaughterhouse. We’ve always been running from anti-freedom, anti-individual, anti-life gangs, governments, collectives. Witness history.

The greatest anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-individual, anti-life collective in history and its lesser counterparts...are still on the loose...inside the greatest republic in the history of civilization.

Mohammedism/Marxism ALERT!

Note the name of the ship, the Santa Maria

“...the Santa Maria, was a larger type of ship, a carrack, and was captained by Columbus.”

Islam controlled the land routs to Asia and the European rulers and merchants were powerfully interested in finding non Moslem controlled alternate routes.

Yes, plus ‘in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue’...and 1492 also not by coincidence commenced the Spanish Inquisition under Torquemada. The large Jewish population of both Spain and Portugal was caught between being dhimmie to the Moors and ‘starter’ for the flaming stake of the newly powerful Spanish prelate, his Church and forced conversion. Thus we have Rodrigo, navigator to Columbus, Jewish and subject of a brief, but researched commentary by Will Durant and his histories.

And forced conversions of Mussulmans and Jews. It worked. They retained secretly their religions but their decendants are not Moslems.

Was unaware that the relics of Sts. Peter and Paul were desecrated in Rome in 846 AD.
In junior high school history of western civilization, the whole story of Ferd and Isabella and Chris Columbus was a jolly tale well told, and Christianity was given the nod as a positive impetus contributing to the discovery of the New World, along with the desire for a new trade route to India.
But we were taught NOTHING about the Ottoman Empire, or the ongoing, brutal Muslim invasions of Europe, the desecrations of Christian holy places, and the slaughter.
My recollections of western civ requirements did touch on the Ottoman Empire, as a political entity, but any connection to Islam was glossed over.
This was a curious omission.
I only learned these things years later thru independent reading.
