Students Flood College Mental-Health Centers
Wall Street Journal ^ | 10/10/2016 | ANDREA PETERSEN

Ohio State has seen a 43% jump in the past five years in the number of students being treated at the university’s counseling center. At the University of Central Florida in Orlando, the increase has been about 12% each year over the past decade. At the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, demand for counseling-center services has increased by 36% in the last seven years.

It is unclear why the rates of mental-health problems seem to be increasing among college students. Therapists point to everything from the economy and rising cost of tuition to the impact of social media and a so-called helicopter-parenting style that doesn’t allow adolescents to experience failure. Students are “overwhelmed with stress,” says Micky M. Sharma, director of Ohio State’s Student Life Counseling and Consultation Service. “The coping, the resiliency is not where we want it to be. That’s a bad combination.”

I suffer from PTSD and I can take a test without freaking out. Light a couple of fire crackers in the room then we're talking about another story. These kids are the kind of people that push people off of disability who have real needs. If I type more I'll start using 4 letter words.

It’s because they can’t decide which of 57 genders they want to be today.

I don’t recall there being a mental-health center at my old college. But then we were offended by the words or looks or the fact that the sun rose in the east.

“It is unclear why the rates...”

Uh. I wonder if it has anything to do with their taking on nearly $ 100 grand in debt, or actually concerned their parents are taking it on. Retirement has to give

Safe spaces must be overflowing today after Trump’s macroagression to Hillary.

Most of the time, these treatments were included at the regular student health center on campus. I'd be surprised if they have been separated.

if the students are taking on debt to learn medicine, nursing, or maybe engineering or business, they should be able to pay it off just fine (eventually, they should be able to get jobs even if nothing’s available for them right now in the Obama depression)

if the students are taking on debt to learn Trans-Sexual Liberation Studies, Ancient Persian Basketweaving, or worst of all, “Community Organizing” .... its their own fault and frankly I am sick and tired of all the whining

Point taken. I know a kid who is going to do very well most likely. Studies. Has gone to parties and refuses to continue that and is freaked about th120 k it’s going to take. Freaked. Plus the kids around freak. Had a suicide last week same tough program

I know this isn’t mainstream and I know they have to get out of ‘history, psychology, communications”, I know But there is a double digit unemployment rate that the pro abortion one issue voters supporting the grifters are not allowing anyone to admit, or to say to these kids.

They all know people who have been duped by their uninformed view watching moms who do not consider the impact of media lies on the lives of the twenty somethings. They are so screwed and yes by being spoiled. I know kids who are not spoiled. They say ‘we are so screwed’

I quote a former successful marine currently in pre med using vet scholarships

Nearly every young adult I know under 32 right now is a mental mess.
One of my nieces is NOT a mess and I’m trying to mentor her thru the next 5 years to keep her from marrying one of these useless men.

One of them said he wanted to move to China and teach them to grow rice....
They have only been doing it for 2000 years.

There are probably some of them seeking prescription meds to abuse or sell. It is a big problem on college campuses that few talk about or notice.

This story is sad. Too many of our young people have been raised to believe they are special and the world owes them something. They are not grounded because they struggle to believe there is something far larger than them. God. Even if you are not a Christian, Jew, or practice another faith, the simple idea that there is a deity puts us on our place. Life simply makes more sense when we don’t place ourselves first, yet our society in the past decades has indoctrinated children that they are “special” and we owe them something.

I wonder how many of our “psychological” problems are really a problem of the spirit?

also,

the first two years are either essentially free or very very cheap

(and some community colleges are better learning places than the lower divisions of some major universities)

after that, there are hundreds of perfectly good state-sponsored universities to finish the BA/BS. And at a good number of them, the MAJORITY of students receive some forms of financial aid too

$120,000 of debt is usually very unnecessary to incur.
just saying...

selecting a good major.....
selecting good and affordable colleges....
applying for financial aid (loans, grants, scholarships, work study opportunities)
and yes, a little part time job can help a lot, too
yes and yes, and the student can graduate without debt or t least without anything like $120,000 of debt!

are there some situations which may justify that kind of debt? yes. medical school, for instance. NOT a BA in Homosexual Literature of Fifteenth Century Krapistan

Students are “overwhelmed with stress,”

Perhaps they're worried that if they don't keep their marks up they will be drafted.
