These incredible photographs show how New Zealand's 7.8 magnitude earthquake lifted the seabed two metres - and exploded through the sand.
Dramatic aerial pictures reveal the scale of the devastation caused on the coastline north of Kaikoura, on the country's South Island.
Scientists say the seabed lifted an estimated two metres on the foreshore and admit they have never seen anything like it.
It comes as rain and strong winds battered central New Zealand on Thursday, threatening further damage - just days after the quake killed two people and sparked with huge landslides.
More than 1,000 tourists and residents have since been evacuated from the small seaside town by a fleet of helicopters and a naval vessel since the 7.8 magnitude quake struck early on Monday.

Shouldn’t all the people be rioting and looting by now?

6.56 ft. Substantial.
I’m reminded of what earthquakes in 62 an 79 were the precursors for. (To use a preposition to end a sentence with.)
Terrifying.
How did that not cause a Tsunami big enough to wipe out a country?
How is such a thing possible?
Truly terrifying and makes you feel small.
And raised the sea level, no doubt. I should bury my car and ride a bicycle.
It is all that fracking their doing in the area......
That must stink by now. And that is the least of the problems.
....in the US.
I saw this article posted on Facebook. Along with it was another article for the tin-foil hat folks...

I thought all those jokes about Cheney’s earthquake & hurricane machine were just that! ;-)
Wow. I bet THEIR president wasn’t golfIngrid.
The article talks about the quake causing the lifting, but in reality the sudden lifting causes the quake ...
Yup. The earth can make a tiny, insignificant vibration that wipes out ten million people.
So many ignoramuses around. It's a real problem.
Trump’s fault...it must be...it can’t be nature...
Shallow water. The amount of water column actually moved was pretty small.
A great deal depends upon the topography of the area where the landslip occurs. I agree that one would think such an enormous displacement would have to cause a bad tsunami but not in this case. FYI: I believe that the highest known tsunamis have occurred in areas of restricted waters like bays and fjords like the 1,720 ft one in Alaska (1958). Still, it is the ones like the Indonesian post-Christmas 2004 Tsunami that make the worry very real as it reached all of the way across the Indian Ocean to Africa and started with a 108 ft height in Indonesia.
Incredible pictures...yes. And definitely a warning for the west coast of the USA.
It has been predicted that the earthquake along the subduction zone off of the Oregon Coast will result in a 9.0+ magnitude earthquake (the zone extends all along the Pacific Coast from southern Alaska to San Franciso / Northern California). The resulting subsidence along the coast may be as much as 100 feet after the pressure ceases uplifting the Coastal Ranges. The resulting tsunami may be as much as 100 feet.
They’re Kiwis, hardy, self reliant, Rugby mad quasi and actual Polynesians. Not at all like our urban feral packs. If that quake occurred on the opposite side of the Ring of Fire, say just offshore of Los Angeles, there would be certain wealthy neighborhoods where the residents would regret not following through on their promises to leave the country after Trump’s election.
