Trump's top advisor, Stephen Bannon, is pushing economic statism, grinning at the destruction of conservative economists. Trump met off the record with property developers Sagar and Atul Chordia, the builders of the first Trump-brand property in India, as well as developer Kalpesh Mehta, whose firm claims to be the "exclusive India representative of the Trump Organization." He sneaked Ivanka Trump into a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He tweeted his thoughts on the cast of "Hamilton" and the one-sided comedy of "Saturday Night Live," asking, "Equal time for us?"
The point of this exercise isn't to rip Trump. It's to point out that conservatives who rightly tore Hillary Clinton apart for pay-for-play corruption and hardcore big government leftism shouldn't grant Trump a free hand just because he leads the Republican Party. In fact, that's the biggest mistake Republicans can make.
Trump has already challenged traditional conservative standards. He's made Republicans back off their "character matters" arguments. He's forced Republicans to swallow anti-conservative heresies on economics (free trade is a negative; entitlements should be left alone), social issues (he thinks same-sex marriage should be enshrined by the Supreme Court and praises Planned Parenthood) and foreign policy (his coziness with Russia used to be taboo). Republicans did all of this to stop Hillary Clinton.
But now, Clinton has been dispatched. That means it's time for conservatives to hold Trump accountable. There's no longer any "better than Hillary" excuse making. It's time for Trump to perform.
It's too early to tell whether Trump will become a decent president. But conservatives ought to fight for something better than "not Hillary" or else, they can simply acknowledge that they had no real objective standards for those who seek to govern other than political convenience.

So, probably not levin?
Levin is mostly dead to me at this point. I can’t force myself to listen to him anymore.
Dear Never Trumnpers Shapiro and Levin
Please stop calling yourselves “Conservatives”. You aren’t. You are shameless attention whores.
How would Shapiro and Levin know what conservative means when they don’t even know what natural born citizen means?
Liberals work for a big agenda of transforming the country and tearing down the society created by our constitution. So they stick by their reps in order to bring/keep all their various factions and activists together.
25 years of professional complainers and completely ineffective screw ups want to lend a hand in helping the Democrats and the left because “muh true conservatism”.
We the people won this. We will take it from here.
They had their chance to make a real difference, and the only thing they did was make a lot of money off of us.
“It’s to point out that conservatives who rightly tore Hillary Clinton apart for pay-for-play corruption and hardcore big government leftism shouldn’t grant Trump a free hand just because he leads the Republican Party. “
Really? I thought the “conservatives” ripped Trump apart and vowed never to vote for him.
This guy is a first class idiot. I’ve seen and heard him enough during the campaign. He was quick always to criticize Trump or his staff.
He’s an ex Breibart columnist, and terrible. I learn nothing from him.
The Glenn Beck clone wants a job.
Get off the air ya big globalist dope.
Hey Mark put a sock in it will you, you little twerp? You are quickly becoming an enemy. Go away your side lost. Hillary lost; Trump won.
Shapiro and Levin are petrified that Trump might actually follow through on the promises he made to his supporters.
Shapiro is a gasbag clown that loves to hear himself talk.
I am prepared to disagree with Trump on a number of issues, and certainly feel free to criticize him when I do.
But this over-the-top freakout when the guy is not even going to take office for six weeks is friggin’ insane!
The Never Trumpers were proven irrelevant in 2016, and we should treat them that way.
Where was Shapiro's (self)righteous indignation and ideological purity when it came to the "anti-conservative heresies" of George W. Bush? I don't recall Benjy being so full out outrage when W. bailed out banks with taxpayer dollars, pushed amnesty for illegals, expanded Medicaid, gave billions in aid to Third World Countries, or refused to stop subsidizing Fanny May-Freddy Mac with the hope of pandering to "minority" voters.
The bottom line is, Shapiro and Levin's ideological criticism of Trump is just a front. They're still angry that someone other than an RNC-approved party hack made it to the White House, and are looking for excuses to vent.
Even Mitt Romney has gotten over this petty gripe. Isn't about time these two jokers did the same?
When such a event comes to pass, Levin will be bashing the conservatives day after day after day after day in the most savage and uncompromising of terms, again.
+1. Mark Levin is the ultimate backbencher.
