Hi Jim, I didn't know how to email you privately so I'll use one of the more casual forums. This is not a new topic, I'm sure, but let me add my voice to whatever clamor there is to migrate Free Republic to a more modern forum software package, one that

1. Has functions which are easy to see/find and invoke

2. Allows easier upload of pictures

3. That allows email notification of replies to comments

4. That allows editing after a comment is posted

5. That has text editing features so one doesn't need to know HTML code in order to add emphasis.

6. That has a Search function for previous posts

7. That is easier to navigate to the specialty forums such as "Gods, Graves, Glyphs", which, had it not been mentioned in a random post, I never would have found here on FR.

This is the modern era, there are far, far better forum software packages out there. Free Republic may well experience a rapid growth in users post Trump victory. We'll want to make joining and participating fully in FR as easy as possible.

Reader View would be helpful on the iPhone.

That's not necessary. However a very simple meta viewport tag in the head of the template would do wonders for us that view FR on a phone. The following code in the <head> tag wouldn't even require a major QA effort for release:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">

I disagree with all the poster’s suggestions. Let him go to Facebook. My iPad kicks me out of my browser almost every time I use it due to the memory overflow from all the ad content. And some pages can’t even be viewed due to their constant automatic failures to completely loading. And videos? Forget it. And editing posts after posting? Exercise some discipline. It doesn’t take much html knowledge to post here. I absolutely do not want to receive email messages when someone responds to one of my posts. The highlight at the top of the Free Republic page is notification enough.

JimRob, the simplicity of the site is its strength. Please keep it that way!

Don’t change a thing.

It’s just fine the way it is.

It ain’t broke.

Don’t fix it.

Thank you

That is all.

My son and an associate wrote IOS and Android phone and tablet apps for Free Republic that present FR’s content with all the comments in a threaded view format, to make following a back and forth reply chain effortless.

We have not decided whether, or how, to release them for anyone else’s use yet.

The apps do not allow posting content. An FR user would have to log in to FR with a browser for that. These are just for quick, easy FR reading on the go.

The apps use a server that reads Free Republic content, caches it, figures out the comment threads and presents the posts to the app user with the comment and comment replies in a threaded viewing format.

We suspect that Jim and the FR community may not care enough about the functionality we’ve added by making these apps to justify the cost and maintenance for them.

lol. I agree with your assessment. Them ‘05ers cannot be trusted.
Ban them, I say.

Mea culpa.
No one is perfect; I usually allow for the exception, but experience has shown that 2002-2006 had a huge influx of Obama/Soros/trolls, in anticipation of Omugabe's election. 2005 being the high point.
Amazingly,a few clever ones still remain.

But there are still a few exceptions.

I agree no advertising. FR is one of the few political sites that doesn’t crash the browser in my aging IPad II because of all the advertising scripts running in the background.

Any body remember when reloading a thread all responses would have to reload instead of just 50 or so. Was especially hard for us on dial up at the time when thread was full of pics. At that time there was a thread asking for suggestions on how to improve the site, and the problem was fixed.

“I love this format because it is QUICK on the downloads. I have a slow internet speed because of where I live and this format works great for me.”

Agreed! I have a decent internet speed through a cellular connection, and the downloads are quick unless there’s a lot of video being posted. Then, not only is it slow, but it starts costing money for data usage as some feel the need to ‘share’ their favorite movie clips or the like.

It is part of our culture. It is meaty and full of flavor. It is the best forum on the InterWeebs. If it gets too intense, it will crash my phone or some older laptops.

It provides nourishment and electrolytes.

yikes...I should have used the sarcasm tag. It eats up my eyes.

I think it also had orange in the later forums. Someone could check me on that.

Yea, but what would the spelling nazis do?

Keep campaigning for at least a 7th grade level of spelling ability...

It's hard to take anyone's opinion about anything seriously if they lack the ability to know the difference between its and it's; your and you're; must of and must have...

Typos are usually obvious and get a pass. Nobody's perfect; but I refuse to believe that 25% of American adults are dyslexic.
