Diet soda contains chemicals found in rust remover

Rust remover, anyone? Or maybe a dash of cement with your meal?

Swapping your “full-fat” Coke for a diet alternative might seem like the sensible, healthy thing to do. But think again.

Last week, experts at Imperial College, London claimed sugar-free drinks won’t help you lose weight or avoid Type-2 diabetes.

In fact, they could stimulate your appetite and make you gain weight.

And worse, some sugar-free soda has ingredients you wouldn’t usually dream of consuming — chemicals found in rust remover, steel cleaner, and cement, albeit in tiny quantities.

They also have ingredients that in high doses have been linked to DNA damage, hyperactivity, and bone fractures.

Dr. Marilyn Glenville, author of “The Natural Alternative To Sugar,” says: “We don’t know the chemical cocktail effect of these ingredients.

“Some negatively affect health. Women and girls who regularly drink these drinks increase their risk of osteoporosis in later life.”

“There is also a lot of research showing artificially sweetened drinks promote weight gain and affect gut bacteria levels.”

George Burns lived to be a 100 and did nothing but smoke cigars and enjoyed the occasional adult beverage.

Is too healthy bad for you?

I think diet soda is garbage, and I still have a diet pepsi once or twice a month.
I’m surprised people can lose weight drinking it. I find anytime that I drink a diet soda I get a really bad craving for sweets. That’s why I sparingly drink it .

And we breathe a mixture of chemicals in order to live any one of which individually would kill us so what's a little rust remover anyway?

Ah..that’s good. See, you probably just liked diet soda’s fizz..the carbonation. Which can be kind of addicting too. Addicting as in you get used to it so much, its hard drinking non carbonated drinks.

It sucks that real Coke was outsourced to Mexico.

I can’t stand HFCS.

It’s just not the same as real sugar. Why are we giving King Sugar government subsidies?

Ah, I know. I ####ING HATE water.

I drink wine with meals because I grew up with that in an Italian household.

It’s my addiction, psychological maybe, but STILL an addiction.

Brings me comfort. Dont know why :)

Everything you said is right.

And when I get cancer I’ll never know if it was from the diet cokes or not!

What if you have rust in you that needs removing?

The stupidity offered up in this article is of the highest grade, and it provides quality entertainment and endless opportunities for ridicule.

experts at Imperial College, London claimed sugar-free drinks won’t help you lose weight or avoid Type-2 diabetes.

Sugar substitutes weren't created for people to lose weight and avoid diabetes. They were created so that diabetics could enjoy beverages that didn't use sugar.

I wonder if the author is aware that orange juice contains the chemical that makes paint stripper work. She would probably go insane if she knew of all the highly toxic chemicals she consumes every day from foods she considers healthy. Idiots on parade.

It tastes like rust too. LOL! Diet soda has been a gag from the beginning.

Drop regular soda for just a few days and peel off the waist line. Limits. We can do it, people.

We are on the same page. I enjoy wine with meals too and roll my eyes at the “why don’t you have a nice glass of water” people. I love it when they put on the act at how yummy the water is. It has no taste (unless you drink city tap water, and that’s not a taste I crave).

I do drink diet sodas, but make my own with Sodastream. I will also buy flavored waters at the grocery store when I feel like living large. /s

But mostly it is coffee, a gift from God!

A lot of rust removal products (WD40 for example) are made from fish oil.

How stupid is the foundation of this article? Of course fish are used to make food as well as rust removers and steel polishes.

I’m not understanding ‘full fat’ - there’s no fat in regular or diet soda, that I’m aware of. Maybe the author was being euphemistic...

After drinking diet sodas for years, I can’t stand the regular stuff. It’s too syrupy-sweet.

My Dad cleaned the rust off a 6-inch Crescent wrench by soaking it in ‘regular’ Coca-Cola (diet hadn’t been invented yet).

Made me wonder about Coca-Cola and my stomach.

I never get this argument as to why you shouldn't drink diet soda. It won't help you lose weight. So what? Most people who drink it don't think that the diet soda itself causes you to lose weight. And most people understand that if you drink a diet soda along with a calorie-full meal, you aren't going to lose weight. In other words, most people, including overweight people, aren't stupid sheep who need the government or some think tank to tell them that diet soda, in and of itself, doesn't result in weight loss.
