Teen Accidentally Helps Discover Lost 16th-Century Civilization in Kansas
New York Post ^ | April 18, 2017 | Natalie O'Neill

A long lost 16th century civilization has been unearthed in rural Kansas — all thanks to a plucky teen who helped archaeologists confirm the incredible discovery.

The metropolis — where up to 20,000 Wichita Indians once lived — was discovered in Arkansas City, in the south-central part of the state, when a high school boy found a cannon ball that tipped off the experts that their long-held suspicions about the existence of Etzanoa were correct, the Kansas City Star reported.

The city, whose name means “The Great Settlement,” is believed to be the second-largest Native American city in the US and was the site of a battle between Spanish explorers and Indian warriors in 1601.

Historian Don Coldsmith wrote some wonderful novels about the early European exploration of the Kansas/Central Plains area in his “Spanish Bit” series.

Wonderful stories told by a masterful story teller.

“I don’t understand the significance of pouring water over that carved area on the rock?”

Sometimes archaeologists (and even stone/marble retailers) will pour water on the surface to make details easier to see. It makes them “pop.” Apparently the camera operator followed the water flow, possibly thinking it was some important ritual, lol.

Years ago I read a history of the Coronado expedition to the Kansas area. According to that author, while there he heard of the De Soto expedition then in Arkansas and tried to make contact. He failed.
When he left, some Spanish priests stayed behind, built what may have been the FIRST church in what is now the USA.
Later word came that the Indians liked the priests and the crops came up well due to their blessings.
HOWEVER, in usual Indian fashion, the priests wanted to preach to OTHER TRIBES, and Indian jealousy caused the Indians to kill the priests.
This was long before the fight mentioned in the article.

Re: Half inch cannon ball

I think the author means “cannon shot.”

There would have been dozens, perhaps hundreds, of those small projectiles loaded into the cannon.

It would have functioned as a giant, long range shotgun.

In 1601, that might have been the first encounter between the Spanish and the indigenous people of Kansas.

Always important to remember that, before the Spanish arrived, Native Americans had never seen horses, or armored warriors, or military guns and explosives, or the wheel, or a written language.

Kansas officials now want to turn the long-lost city — which features a still-functional water shrine on the banks of the Walnut and Arkansas rivers — into a tourist attraction.

Cool. They could charge people to pretend to shoot at indians with canon. Or, just use a rifle. What fun!
