A statue to Francis Scott Key, the writer of the Star Spangled Banner, was defaced overnight in downtown Baltimore, with someone painting “Racist Anthem” on the side of the Bolton Hill monument.
Baltimore Police received a report of the vandalism at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. They are investigating, but have no suspects.

There is mention of slaves in the third stanza of the anthem: “No refuge could save the hireling and slave”.
So is the anthem racist? Absolutely not. From Wikipedia, an explanation:
“The reference to slaves is about the use, and in some sense the manipulation, of black Americans to fight for the British, with the promise of freedom. The American forces included African-Americans as well as whites. The term ‘freemen,’ whose heroism is celebrated in the fourth stanza, would have encompassed both.”
But of course no liberal/anarchist/antifa goon would bother with that explanation. Fascist violence is their only response to any “trigger”.

Given the history of slavery in the US, how many people are going to be OK with singing a verse denigrating slaves, no matter what the convoluted explanation? That’s why it’s never sung. But it’s not necessary to get rid of the entire song.

I never saw this coming. And I’ll be so surprised if they attack Abraham Lincoln.
Most people don’t sing that verse because they never get that far into the song. When was the last time you heard anything beyond the first verse? Only at a seriously patriotic event.

If Sherman, Lincoln, Grant, and Sheridan could look into the future, they’d more than likely have a great change of heart.

But the verse is not denigrating slaves in the first place! It is just saying that those slaves (who were in British service) were in a dangerous position when the battle started. And that makes sense, as those slaves had demanded to be placed in the front lines, opposite the American forces.
And by the way, the term “hireling” refers to the well-known British practice of using mercenaries.

There should be a ten-thousand dollar fine, and five years in jail for defacing, damaging, or destroying, a publically erected statue...no matter who it is.

I don’t know if you should take that bet. I have read elsewhere about anthem protests, all because of the word “slave”. It’s getting around. Now as to where that word appears, you might be right.
But as I noted in my posts #5 and 17, the reference is meant to knock the British, not to celebrate slavery. No matter. The left will use this as a wedge anyway, to split the country even more.
