Thousands of airport geese slaughtered, donated to food pantries in past four years
New York Daily News ^ | Sept. 16, 2017 | James Fanelli

It’s tarmac-to-table dining.

The Canada Geese that plague the city’s airports may have a bullseye on their backs but they’ve been a bounty for food banks in the past four years, the Daily News has learned.

The federal agency in charge of trapping the geese to prevent bird strikes on airplanes in New York has quietly donated thousands of the captured fowl to slaughterhouses for human consumption. Those processing plants give them to food pantries.

I live in the heart of the main migration flyway, mid Nebraska. You should bring your students here for both the Sandhill Crane and Canadian and lesser goose migration.

We as a country have done an excellent job with conservation. Too good in fact.

Geese, deer, both hugely overpopulated.

I'd be interested to hear your "Birder" or non lethal solutions though. I keep an open mind.

I'm a big nature photographer. I'd rather hunt with my camera and eat steak instead but I'm pro hunting.

Are you sure you are on the correct web site?

PETA is on another site.

BTW, how is PETA doing after killing all those dogs and cats they claimed to have saved?

There are several solutions which were offered to the parks people. They acted like troglodytes and only saw their kill solution. If you addle the eggs when they are freshly laid, they won't hatch, but the presence of the now non-viable egg will keep the parents from laying more eggs. You can get the same effect by oiling the egg in its early stages. If you trim the vegetation so that it is not so optimal for providing cover, you discourage geese from parking themselves there. You can also hire trained border collies to chase and harass the geese so that they get the message not to hang around.

Canada Geese are giant poop factories that need to be culled. 40 years ago I lived near a lake that geese invaded. It was idyllic: sand, sun, a float to swim to, all just across the road from my parent’s house.

There were mute swans and snow geese, and lots of mallard ducks. Then the Canada Geese found the place, and within 3 years there was no place to walk without stepping in goose crap. The lawns, the beach, the water were all horribly fouled. The swans, snow geese and ducks fled.

I despise Canada Geese. Kill them all outside their traditional range.

The better word for the headline is "harvest" and not "slaughter" per:
"Thousands of airport geese harvested, donated to food pantries in past four years"

But you see, that would clarify what is actually happening instead of making it into a sensational PETA bloodbath.

This is a parody, right?

Piling has proven inneffective in practice against other birds and is expensive. Whos paying for all of that?

Im a goose hunter and goose farmer. Ive never seen a goose under a shrubbery of any sort and based on observation can say geese are flat out afraid of bushes. That wont help. Are you planning to send agents out with some kind of aquatic lawnmower for the cattails? Aquatic herbicides? Now youre disturbing other wildlife and habitat. Good luck with the other ALFs?

I work as a weather observer in Alaska. I have noticed a significant reduction in flocks flying overhead.

That may be but I dont know why, I never see anything about Pacific flyway geese. Its not my fault, Im only partially responsible for geese from Laffayette to Nunavut on the Central. The geese in the article are being taken from those that go to Baffin Island so this program wouldnt effect yours.
