This MLB fan-danger problem should’ve been fixed 47 years ago
NYPost ^ | September 20, 2017

Every time we see a fresh version of the same terrifying picture, we hear the same thing from relieved broadcasters, fans, ballplayers. Every time a baseball leaves a bat — screaming at 100 miles an hour — and invades the seats where spectators are swilling sodas, scarfing nachos or texting friends, we hear the same: “One of these days, someone is going to get killed.”

Well, here’s the thing: someone already got killed. His name was Alan Fish, he was 14 years old, and on the night of May 16, 1970, he was sitting behind the visitor’s dugout at Dodger Stadium. In the bottom of the third inning, San Francisco’s Gaylord Perry threw a pitch that the Dodgers’ Manny Mota, batting right-handed, ripped foul. It reached the second row

Sad to hear that someone was hurt. I don’t think there needs to be a law.

It’s sad. What is the solution other than having no live fans at games, only tv cameras?

Netting really screws up the view. Don’t bring your toddler to an exposed seat.

In which the NY post relies on the Fallacy of the Dramatic Example to prove its ‘case.’

By their logic no plane should ever fly again.

A lot more kids were killed in car accidents, pools, bicycles, abortions, etc. Ban it all.

1970. 47 years ago. That is how far back they had to go to find someone killed by a foul ball. How many MLB foul balls have been hit into the stands since then?

BTW, Manny Mota was one of my favorite Dodgers at the time. One of the best pinch hitters in baseball.

Yeah, lets put them all behind a massive mesh fence. And maybe make all the fans sit inside plexiglass bubbles.
The rampant fan death rate at baseball games must be dealt with!

Make’s me wonder how Mota ever got over that traumatic experience and carried on with his career.

What sort of netting is used? It should be possible to come up with a kind that isn’t like looking through a chain link fence. It ought to be ok if the net needs to be replaced after catching an errant ball as long as it stops that ball.

One death every 47 years.

It would seem that the safest place in the world would be at an MLB Ballpark!

I’m all in favor of protective netting along both bleacher lines in MLB parks. It’s kind of hard to get out of the way of a broken bat even if you’re paying attention. You may be successful but the person next to you or behind you probably won’t........

Netting really screws up the view.

No it doesn't, I've had seats behind home plate and the protective netting at Comerica Park on many occasions and it didn't obstruct my view whatsoever.........

Don’t forget the helmets.....
I played HS Football with no face guard in 54 and it upgraded to a single bar.
I played LL Baseball with no helmet in 50 & 51, first helmet was 2 pieces of plastic connected with a ‘stretch’ type fabric.
The plastic covered the ear. and surrounding areas about the same design as the BIG BIG Headsets today.

Gonna have to play on ice behind plexiglass since it cuts off the cool summer evening breeze...
