New London The man facing a criminal charge for what city officials say is his failure to maintain an unruly bamboo grove claims he is being unfairly targeted by the city and he is mounting a legal defense in Superior Court.
Carlos Carrion of 16 Borodell Place entered a not guilty plea last week in New London Superior Court to the citys first blight-related criminal infraction under a newly revised blight ordinance. The ordinance allows for criminal penalties and fines when civil actions are exhausted.
City officials claim Carrion repeatedly refused to trim back his bamboo and clean up his property.

I read that The ancient Chinese would stake out prisoners over growing bamboo. You can guess the outcome.
Not just deliberate plantings either.
In wealthy DC suburban Maryland I came across a bamboo thicket easily five times larger than the NL pictured. So dense I couldn’t daylight on the other side.
Came out of the woods to a small meadow that had illegal dirt pile dumps from dreamer/leafblower/landscapers. Guess that some McMansion owners decided bamboo wasn’t working out the way they expected and had their site cleared.
Did cut some nice one inch plus walking poles though.
Arundinaria gigantea is a native bamboo pretty common in the southeastern US.
It is a must-have for any family gardening.
But yeah, you gotta control that stuff. It’s tantamount to kudzu.
I’m not sure what makes that more of a blight than the rest of New London (except for the Conn College / Coast Guard Academy area.)
So true. I used to go to some nice events at the Garde Arts Theater, now, you couldn’t drag me there.

Goodness gracious. It’s akin to 8 years of enduring the Hussein residency.
I only remember going to the Garde once, but it wasn’t really a nice event - Leonard vs. Hearns on closed-circuit TV. I was young and dumb then; now I’m older and a little less dumb.
There was film series, of restored vintage, silent movies [Keaton, Chaplin, etc] that Jane Safer had restored. It was great fare.
[Yes, that Safer...Morley’s wife; Jane was doing film preservation ]

The only thing that works is poisoning the new shoots. It is extremely invasive.
Well, they have gardeners up the wazoo at Biltmore. :)
You've apparently never tried to eradicate bamboo or it's insane cousin, Japanese Knotweed.
LOL no kidding. The only real way to eliminate bamboo is with a Kabota
Thanks Daffynition.
