Its almost time for most of the United States to fall back one hour. As we prepare to enter darker days, some state governments have announced they hope to one day no longer be joining the rest of the country in daylight saving time (DST).
Both Massachusetts and Maine are considering saying a permanent farewell to observing DST. In order to avoid the much dreaded practice, this would require the states to officially switch time zones from Eastern to Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal reports.

There is no DLST on Guam or Micronesian. Since the territory is right on top of the equator there is no need
As usual, the writer screws thing up. The reality is having Massachusetts ( and Maine) go on permanent DST by changing from the Eastern Standard Time Zne to the Atlantic Time Zone.

Massachusetts should only consider moving to what in essence is year-round Daylight Saving Time (changing to Atlantic Time) if a majority of other northeast states, also possibly including New York, also do so, Commission chairwoman Sen. Eileen Donoghue told CBS Boston.
I just researched it quickly. It's amazing, but almost every quick reference got it wrong. The way I look at it is there's no perfect answer when days are so short. Maybe we all need to hibernate more in the winter and make work and school days shorter.
Good. It is stupid. Always has been
As of last Friday, the kids were going to school on the dark. Imagine 500 sleepy new drivers converging on point A in the pitch dark.
So, the switch to EST now makes that problem better. But by December, it will get dark at 4:20.
Maine belongs in the Atlantic time zone. But a move would only make sense if all six NE states did it, and having CT and NYC on different times would be disruptive. Maybe CT could be like Indiana and have Fairfield on EST and the rest on AST.
Studies show a rise in heart attacks, strokes and accidents in the week following time changes.
Maine is in the Eastern Time Zone, Not the Atlantic Time zone
The Romans adjusted the length of hours to fit 12 hours between sun rise to sunset. Hours were longer in Summer and shorter in Winter.
It’s more humane and biological but businesses and military won’t like it. To hard to schedule around an adjusting hour.
I know what time zone Maine is in.
But it BELONGS (geographically) on AST.

Why? AZ doesnt have DST.
I like daylight savings time!
“There is no DLST on Guam or Micronesian. Since the territory is right on top of the equator there is no need”
At 13N the sun rises today about 0616 and sets at 1753.
It’s right around an even split year round. I lived around the FSM and into the Caroline’s, Gilbert’s, & Marshall islands for 8 years. It was nice. Sometimes I want to go back... but I know it would not be the same as it was.
I also sailed around a lot of those atoll’s never went missing and never went aground. But a lot of Mariners did... and do!
DST in the US is bad enough but if you work with a global company it becomes a real nuisance. This time of year all kinds of meetings get missed. Australia, for instance shifted their clocks on October 1, except in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia where they don't observe DST. Mexico set their clocks back on October 29, except for the northern tier of states that border the US, which shifted when the US did. Microsoft has alleviated much of the chaos that used to occur but the probability of someone showing up for a conference call either one or two hours late because they were going by what someone said in an e-mail and not what their Outlook calendar said is directly proportional to their rank in the organization - and if they miss it, it's all IT's fault.
If everyone did away with DST the world (literally) would be a better place;.
Richard Nixon once said that DST was akin to cutting a foot off of one end of a blanket and sewing it back on the other.
It is stupid. Ditch it. Next November, make no change to the clocks. Keep Summer Time all year round.
It does not save any daylight. It is a fiction, invented so we can enjoy our decks until 9 Pm in the Summer. We can’t do anything about the short days of late December.
Set it next March. Keep it all year around. End the foolish exercise of “setting the clocks back or ahead”.
Year-round DST.
More stupidity...
You see all of these discussions about changes related to time zones because the Eastern Time Zone is simply too big. Sunrise this morning in Portland, Maine occurs at 6:22 AM -- while sunrise in Fort Wayne, Indiana is at 7:17 AM. These two cities are in the same time zone, but many of their daily life activities occur at the same time even though they are almost an hour apart based on the rising and setting of the sun.
I suspect a huge portion of the country has been crammed into Eastern Time just to keep as many cities in the same time zone as our government and financial centers.
Rather than screw with the time, how about just changing school and work start times?
Here’s a simpler solution: Just conduct your daily business activities based on the rising and setting of the sun, regardless of what the clock says. Instead of changing your clock so you can hang out on your deck at 9:00 PM, just start your day an hour earlier in the morning so you can hang out on your deck at 8:00 PM and you won’t even notice the difference.
