A smart surveillance system that can identify criminals among a database of 2 billion faces within seconds has been revealed in China. The system connects to millions of CCTV cameras and uses artificial intelligence to pick out targets. Known as 'Dragonfly Eye', it has already been used in Shanghai to track down hundreds of wanted criminals, reports suggest.

Next step. Automatically link the database to the fleet of “law enforcement” drones that patrol the city 24/7. If you’re on the list they track you down and you’re dead.

“Crime” problem solved. Welcome to dystopia.

We don’t have to worry. This system will never be approved in the US, because it would be considered racist.

God has had it much, much longer.

Thankfully, He is patient and kind. Plus, He loves us.

And there are apocryphal stories of a jolly fat man in a red suit who has List...

"We don’t have to worry. This system will never be approved in the US, because it would be considered racist."

Because the majority of criminals it would identify would be Black?
(We'd just have to screw with the numbers like we do with everything else for Blacks, eh?)

And as the slippery slope of what constitutes a “criminal” descends lower and lower into a political swamp (need we say “hate crimes??) the long term negatives of this kind of technology become huge, and I don’t mean merely in China.

That’s not “artificial intelligence.” It’s just a highly-sophisticated computer program running on a fast computer with access to huge databases of pictures.

The problem with that show is that it’s not fiction.

The Machine. Ahh, that was such a good show! And a slow build up from “protector of the week” to a full on sci/fi dystopian thriller about AI, and the future of not just crime and crime fighting, but ‘normal’ everyday people.

Person of Interest... just awesome.

This is light years beyond any nightmare technology that George Orwell ever imagined. When he wrote “1984” television cameras weighed hundreds of pounds and cost thousands of dollars. It was a cautionary tale, but few people then expected TV cameras to actually become omnipresent. Nor were there enough people to watch the monitors. Now with supercomputers and microscopic cameras that cost pennies, everything has changed. I see cameras everywhere that I drive or walk in public. The infrastructure for abuse is already in place.
