Obama remains most admired man in the world: poll

Barack Obama’s legacy may be under attack by President Trump — but he still has bragging rights as the most admired man in the world, according to a new Gallup poll.

The poll found 17 percent of people questioned named Obama the man they admired most, a drop from 22 percent last year.

Trump took second place with 14 percent, while Hillary Clinton was named the most admired woman for the 16th year in a row, with 9 percent of mentions, Gallup found.

Obama has now been named the most admired man 10 times in a row, trailing only Dwight Eisenhower, who earned the distinction 12 times.

The 44th president won all eight years he was in office, plus 2008 — the year he was first elected — and this year, his first as an ex-president.

Trump is one of few incumbent presidents who have not been named the most admired among all Americans. The incumbent has won 58 of 71 times.

Previous incumbent commanders-in-chief who did not finish first include Harry Truman in 1946-1947 and 1950-1952, Lyndon Johnson in 1967-1968, Richard Nixon in 1973, Gerald Ford in 1974-1975, Jimmy Carter in 1980, and George W. Bush in 2008.

What is important is what AMERICANS think of him. I don’t care what the rest of the world thinks of him.

These polls taken in the news rooms are valid only in the news rooms. They should get out of their little social bubbles and talk to real people.

He’s had a thousand committed Fourth-Estate liberal pressmen as his publicity agents, about two-decades-worth of them. No wonder the hype is stiil flowing without abatement.

After another three years of President Trump, folks will tilt their heads sideways and respond...”uh, umm, uh...Bush?” when asked who was the president before Donald J. Trump.

Obozo is rapidly vaporizing into a sea of forgetfulness. lol. Love it.

"Obama remains most admired man in the world."

That doesn't say much for the state of the world.

These polls are based on knee-jerk reactions as to what famous person comes to mind first. The most admirable people in the world are probably people we’ve never heard of, working behind the scenes for some noble cause.

True. I was humbled by the staff at a cancer hospital. The nurses would end their shifts and then volunteer to stay without pay to calm children frightened of the CAT scan machine. Never see their names in lights.

It just shows the mindset of the world and why we are in such deep trouble. It is not curable.

All fair points about the 1000ish sample size of Americans, that Deplorables are likely hanging up/underrepresented, and the condifence interval around Trump's and Obama's percentages likely overlap.

But if you look deeper at the PDF of the results, you see noteworthy omissions from the headline, even taking all these design weaknesses into account:

1. Gallup asks: "What man that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire most? And who is your second choice?

There is a LITTANY of choices offered....Barack Obama,Donald Trump, Pope Francis, Rev. Billy Graham, John McCain, Elon Musk, Bernie Sanders, Bill Gates, Benjamin Netanyahu, The Dalai Lama, Mike Pence, Jeff Bezos, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Justin Trudeau, Joe Biden, Ben Carson, Stephen Hawking, Warren Buffett, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Prince William, Michael Jordan, MittRomney, Thomas Monson, Colin Powell, George Clooney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Ted Cruz, Vladimir Putin, Joel Osteen, Pope Benedict XVI, Tiger Woods, Tony Blair, Mark Zuckerberg, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Clint Eastwood, Brad Pitt, Rush Limbaugh, Francois Hollande, Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, Tim Tebow, Al Gore, Liu Xiaobo, Dick Cheney, Nelson Mandela

2. Despite this plethora of listed men, the REAL "winner" of this Gallup poll for most admired man for the past 11 years, clocking in at over 50% every year, has been these options in the aggregate: Friend/Relative, Other, and None/No opinion. Parenthetically, the aggregate response for the question Most Admired FEMALE for Friend/Relative & Other was higher than that for the listed men in 2016 and 2017. Or, put another way, our alleged American nation of misogyny admires female family members or friends MORE than the male brethren AND any listed male OR female.

Now, I think Trump has been a great President, making good on his MAGA pro, sir. But even if Reagan was President, I'd answer either Friend/Relative or Other as someone I admire (and here is the operative word) MOST.

This should be good news to most of us. The highest level of admiration shouldn't go to a politician, musician, movie star, or basically a stranger...that borders on idolatry. I'll stick to Jesus or God on the male side, and my wife on the female side.

So, where are the bragging rights?

***I STILL see “Obama! A legacy to be treasured forever!” type magazines at my local grocery story.***

It is like 1968 when all the stores started selling cheap memorial medallions of MLK after he was murdered.
