Great acting by Hal Holbrook
Into the Wild via You Tube ^ | April 9, 2018 | beaversmom

I watched Into the Wild (2007) last night on NetFlix for the first time. I am familiar with the story, and even have the book. I have had the book for many years, but have yet to read it.

Hal Holbrook's character, Ron Franz, comes in toward the end of the film. His on screen time is not that much, but the acting, to me, is so good and real. His character really made me cry. I felt so much compassion for him.

I have seen Holbrook in TV movies and feature films over the decades, and have always thought he was a really good actor, but his role in this, even though fairly short, should have garnered him an Oscar...jmo.

Two short scenes with Holbrook's character:

I thought he was great in “Wall Street”, had the best line in the movie....

“Man looks in the abyss, there’s nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character. And that is what keeps him out of the abyss.”

Didn’t know it was him in the flick. In the book I do believe he offered everything to the kid since he was old. Likable kid but headstrong. Listened to no one.

Very thought provoking line.

I have not seen that movie, but I remember it coming out in the 80s.

Strangely enough, that line from Wall Street seems to apply to this movie, Into the Wild.

The movie sucked. Some loser dies in an old school bus because he thought he could just trapse off to ALASKA and “camp” without any knowledge or training or skills or common sense.

The gene pool is better off.

Thank you for posting Beaversmom, a great vid.

This Discovery Channel Documentary from 1996 helped spark my interest in Battleships growing up. Which of lead to History being my main subject :)

It is wonderfully narrated by Hal Holbrook ~ Battleship part 1 of 12

When I was in grad school at the U of Wyoming, saw his act “Mark Twain Tonight” which was great. Only interesting feature as his mustache came loose during the performance.

I think he was in Bridge on the River Kwai. The lone American and he killed it with his performance as the skirt-chasing, fraud Navy officer.

One of my favorite actors.

I was in high school when Evening Shade was running on CBS. What an amazing cast. Holbrook was one of the best parts of the show.

I need to see Bridge again. Saw it years ago. David Lean is a favourite. I’ll have to look up about Holbrook in movie.

He wasn’t in that movie, I believe you have him mistaken for William Holden.
