MONROE -- A Louisiana roofer faces misdemeanor charges after repossessing a roof because he hadn't been paid.

Authorities arrested 66-year-old Andrew Jackson Higdon III, of West Monroe, Tuesday on charges of simple criminal damage to property and criminal trespass. The News-Star reports Higdon was freed after posting $4,500 bond.

She said when she came home on Dec. 22, 2016, the roof and roofing paper were gone. She couldn't get someone to cover the roof with tarps before it rained, so she said her ceiling and furniture were damaged.

This guy must have been mad about something as it seems like it would take a lot of effort to repo a roof.

He should have taken it to small claims court but maybe he has had to do this too many times over the years so he snapped.

It may be that he was tired of people getting away with it in court.

This reminds me of large companies that will spend $100,000 to fight frivolous $25,000 lawsuits to keep people from doing it. Repossessing the roof definitely sends a message to future clients. :)

Pay cash.

50% down.
30% on first inspection.
Final payment on final inspection.

Make sure the permits are pulled and a performance bond is posted with your name on it.

Most roofers will offer at least a 10% discount if paid ingreen foldie stuff.

I don’t see an issue with what he did.

He should have Googled it:

The procedure is relatively straightforward.

Around here when a roof is removed (assuming typical asphalt), it takes a couple of hours with the push-scraper tools, and the asphalt landing in the dumpster, if not the lawn and foundation plants.

I would think to remove a roof with any chance of reusability would take many painstaking days. And, even then, you'd wind up with nailhole leakpoints in every shingle.

It’s Louisiana, so things work differently under the Napoleonic code.

We had our pool redone, got a discount for cash and 50% required up front the remaining 50% due upon finish and inspection.
Same for the roof when we had it done last year.

Probably a metal roof. They are very popular now, and the panels definitely are reusable.

She will probably be forced into paying him.

He will probably be forced into replacing the roof. He will lose twice.

1. The cost of his time repoing the roof.
2. The cost of his time replacing it.

He’s an idiot. I would not do business with him.

roofers usually try to stay out of court. He probably put a lien on the house because the Homeowner disputed his charges. There are many former ‘roofers’ that are in jail because they have defrauded people. I am not saying this is what happened, but there are always two sides to every story. Many times the roofers are paid by the Insurance company and then try to get additional funds from the homeowner. In many cases, it is a license to steal. I am probably out of line because I do not know the facts of this story, but my radar goes up in how the story was presented.

I’ve had a mechanics lein on an a/c company for 10 years or so, the guy clearly ripped me off, sold me a high seer unit when I filed my taxes and tried to claim the tax benefit, I found he put a less efficient unit in and did not qualify for rebate. I was told I would receive my money at some point, I heard recently the guy died, I haven’t seen any Money. Big waste of time and effort.

Agree as who knows all the actual details of the agreement the two had.

But this goes back to the end of June, 2017 when the job was completed.
So he is now 10 months into trying to get paid.

I agree small claims would have kept him out of jail. It does not get your money back though. All it gives you is a lien

Got to admit it’s a clever way to deal with services rendered
