Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) said it would launch the worlds longest commercial flight in October, a near-19 hour non-stop journey from Singapore to the New York area. The 8,277 nautical mile (15,329 kilometer) flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey with 161 business class and premium economy seats will eclipse the 7,843 nautical mile Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the worlds longest, according to airline data provider OAG.

19 hours? That’s a long commercial, when do they find time for the movie?

So, to NYC is only an hour longer. Must be due to “great circle” routing.

We just flew from Dallas to Hong Kong and we went STRAIGHT NORTH up to the Artic Circle and then down over China!!!! That seemed so damned WEIRD to me!! I guess I have to study the curvature of the earth better!

Flying from Camp Pendleton in California to Okinawa we always flew north to Alaska and then across to Okinawa. I think it has something to do with catching the correct wind speeds across the Pacific. In the end, they save more fuel by flying that route than going straight across.

I hear ya, and I’m well aware that many of the international carriers have near-supermodel flight attendants (and the U.S. and some Euro operators are actually unique in their apparent disregard for looks or age as a hiring criteria). At the same time, if I’m stuck in a cramped coach seat for a long-haul flight, I don’t care how hot the stewardesses are. If I’m going >8 hours, I need to be comfortable. And once you’ve had a fully flat seat, it’s hard to go back.

Sing to LA is 18 hours and Sing to NY is 19 hours, but LA to NY is a lot more than one hour. I’m assuming a great circle route that makes it only one hour longer than Sing to LA.

If they get clearance to overfly NW Russia, they’ll wing it over the North Pole down to NY.
Sleep, food, walking and entertainment. Probably round trip.

Dear robroys woman,
re: “On the plus side, I always needed some private time to finally read War and Peace.”
I’ve read the English translation 364 pgs., and the Russian print version 480 pgs. Are you sure you are gauging your time right, at 19 hrs.??
I used to work in an anechoic chamber radar test structure. Yes, it was larger than the structure of an aircraft fuselage, but “shift end” was very desireable. 19 hours is a “stretch”.
